The Hardest Domestic Hardwood and How to Buy It Right
Building MaterialsHickory is the hardest, heaviest, and strongest hardwood native to North America. It is the heaviest, hardest, and strongest of all North American hardwoods. That single fact drives almost every reason to buy it — and almost every headache that comes with working it. For a contractor or serious DIY builder choosing flooring, cabinetry, or heavy-use furniture, hickory is the call when toughness matters more than easy machining.
Here’s the honest trade-off up front. The hickories are difficult to machine and glue, and are very hard to work with hand tools; therefore, care is needed. You buy hickory for its hardness, then you fight that same hardness on the saw and at the glue-up. Worth it for the right job. Frustrating if you walked in expecting it to cut like poplar.
The wood comes from the Carya genus, and the species story matters less than you’d think once it’s milled. Botanically they are split into two groups: the true hickories and the pecan hickories. The wood is virtually the same for both and is usually sold together. In the lumber industry, true and pecan hickories are mixed and sold under each other’s group name. In fact, once the wood is processed into lumber, it cannot be distinguished by species, based on physical appearance alone. Don’t lose sleep over which species you’re getting. You can’t tell, and neither can the mill.
Hickory’s Janka rating is the headline. Hickory rates 1,820 on the Janka scale, with a specific gravity of .67 and a weight of 4.14 pounds per board foot. Stack that against the common alternatives and the gap is real.

That puts hickory well above the oaks and hard maple builders normally reach for. It carries high bending and crushing strength, high stiffness and very high shock resistance. The modulus of rupture exceeds 20,000 lbf per square inch, giving the wood exceptional shock resistance that has made it the standard choice for tool handles, ladder rungs, and athletic equipment for generations.
That shock resistance is exactly why hickory holds up under abuse. Renowned for its exceptional hardness and impact resistance, Hickory is suited for high-traffic flooring and heavy-duty applications. Its natural color variation, from creamy whites to deep browns, allows for a striking visual contrast. In a Montana household with big dogs, mudroom traffic, and an active family tracking grit across the floor, that wear resistance earns its keep.
With most lumber, grade tells you about defects and structural soundness. With hickory, grade is mostly an aesthetic decision — how much of that dramatic color swing and knotty character you want to see. Hickory shows significant color variation from board to board, ranging from creamy white sapwood to dark reddish-brown heartwood. The contrast between sapwood and heartwood is often the design feature itself.
The grading runs on clear-face cutting yield. Hickory Prime is the highest yielding grade, yielding at a minimum 83-1/3% clear-face cuttings. Hickory #1 Common yields at a minimum 66-2/3% clear face cuttings with minimum cutting sizes of 4 inches. Hickory #2 Common yields shorter cuttings with the best face yielding a minimum of 50%. Below that sits the rustic tier. Rustic Hickory is designed for rustic and distressed furniture, cabinetry and flooring applications.
How to think about it:
You’ll also run into the standard NHLA terms. Lumber grades include Common 1 & 2, Select and Better, and FAS. The rustic grade pairs naturally with the look most folks want in a mountain home, cabin, or timber-frame interior — that calico grain sitting next to a stone fireplace is a tested combination. Just know going in that hickory comes with its own character defects baked into the species. Hickory lumber often has defects such as ingrown bark, tight knots and bird peck.
Hickory is sold kiln-dried in standard hardwood dimensions. Western Building Center carries it as 4/4 hickory, sold by the board foot. Typical widths run 3 inches to 12 inches, and lengths run 8 feet to 12 feet, sometimes longer.
Now the part that bites people. Hickory dulls tooling fast. It blunts cutting edges quickly, and tearout during machining is common if tools are not kept sharp. Carbide is not optional here — steel edges won’t last. And the splitting tendency is real: the hickories hold nails and screws well, but there is a tendency to split, so pre-boring is advised. Pre-drill near board ends, every time.
On the upside, it takes a finish and bends beautifully. Hickory has excellent steam bending characteristics. It stains and polishes to a good finish.
Drying and movement deserve real attention in a dry Montana interior. The wood can be difficult to dry, and has high shrinkage. It is challenging to dry consistently due to its high density and significant volumetric shrinkage, so careful kiln-drying and thorough acclimation before fabrication are essential. Rushed drying leads to checking, warping, and internal stress that can cause problems during machining. For flooring especially, let it sit in the space before you fasten anything down. Keeping the indoor environment steady cuts the seasonal movement that hickory is prone to — maintaining indoor humidity around 40 to 60 percent reduces seasonal movement in solid wood.
One hard limit: keep it inside. Hickory is not recommended for outdoor use, as hickory heartwood is rated non-durable to perishable regarding decay resistance and is susceptible to insect attack. The sapwood is susceptible to powder post beetles. This is an interior wood. Flooring, cabinetry, furniture, stair treads — not decks, not anything that sees weather.
How hard is hickory compared to oak and maple? Considerably harder. Hickory is the heaviest, hardest, and strongest of all North American hardwoods. Its Janka rating of 1,820 sits well above white oak at 1,350, red oak at 1,220, and hard maple at 1,450 on the same comparison scale.
What is hickory used for? Heavy-use interior work, mostly. It is suited for high-traffic flooring and heavy-duty applications. Common uses run to tool handles, furniture, cabinetry, flooring, wooden ladders, dowels, and sporting goods. The strength and shock resistance are why it’s been the standard for tool and axe handles for generations.
Why does my hickory stain unevenly? That two-tone contrast between sapwood and heartwood is the species at work. Oil finishes welcome patina and emphasize the natural color variation between sapwood and heartwood. The wood stains well, but the dramatic natural color variation means most clients choose to keep it natural. Many builders run a clear or oil finish specifically to showcase that character rather than fight it. On factory-graded Appalachian stock, hickory stains remarkably well and the color variations are leveled out when stained.
Can I use hickory outside? No. It is non-durable. Trees and logs are susceptible to attack by forest longhorn beetle, and the sapwood is susceptible to powder post beetles. Keep it indoors.
