Alder is a soft, fine-grained hardwood from the Pacific Northwest that does one job better than almost anything in its class: it takes stain evenly and finishes clean. Red alder is the most abundant hardwood in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, and is a commercially important lumber. For cabinet shops and builders who need a stainable hardwood that machines without a fight, it’s the practical choice — and it can be made to imitate the cherry and walnut it stands in for.

Here’s the honest trade-off. Red alder is very easy to work with both hand and machine tools; it sands especially easy. The wood is rather soft, however, and care must be taken to avoid denting it in some applications. That softness is the whole story with alder — it’s why it machines like butter and why it’ll ding if you abuse it. Know that going in, and you’ll use it in the right places.

What Alder Is and Why Builders Reach for It

Red alder has a uniform honey color with limited differences between heartwood and sapwood. Coupled with its reliable stability, it is a popular choice for both furniture and cabinetry. With a closed grain and fine texture, the rich light brown color sets during the drying process at 8.5% moisture content, which limits darkening and yellowing over time like other species are susceptible to.

The color consistency matters more than people expect. Alder is almost white when freshly cut, but quickly changes with exposure to air, becoming light brown with a yellow or reddish tinge. Heartwood is formed only in trees of advanced age and there is no visible boundary between sap and heartwood. No sapwood-to-heartwood line means you’re not fighting color mismatch across a run of face frames.

On hardness, alder sits at the soft end. Red alder has a Janka hardness of 590 lbf. Put that next to red oak at 1,220 and hard maple at 1,450, and you can see why it dents. The flip side is workability. Alder machines well and is excellent for turning. It nails, screws and glues well, and can be sanded, painted, or stained to a good finish. When stained, it blends with walnut or cherry. It dries easily with little degrade and has good dimensional stability after drying.

That staining trick is the reason it sells. Often sought after as an alternative to other hardwoods such as walnut, cherry, or maple, it can be stained or finished to perfectly emulate these other wood species. It also stands in as a stable alternative to poplar and soft maple, favored for its reliability amid the market volatility of other hardwoods.

One real limitation for Montana work: keep it inside. The wood has good stability with little movement in service once fully dried, which is exactly what you want for cabinetry and doors facing big indoor humidity swings between dry winter heat and summer. But red alder is rated non-durable to perishable regarding decay resistance, and freshly cut logs should be quickly converted into lumber and dried to prevent staining or decay in the wood. Translation: this is an interior, protected-application wood. Don’t put it in ground contact or unprotected exterior exposure.

Grades: The Decision That Drives the Look

Grade is the first call to make, and it shapes both the look and the yield. At the simplest level, red alder is usually sold in two different grades: knotty and clear. Knotty red alder sits on par with other domestic utility woods. Clear red alder runs closer to other domestic cabinet hardwoods.

Knotty isn’t a defect — it’s the design. Knotty Alder is defined by its character, with the number and kind of knots and grain patterns allowed determining the grade of the lumber. The knots range from sound and tight to open, with different splits, color variations, and imperfections allowed on the board. The effect is more rustic and imperfect than Select grades where the grain is straighter and there are no visible knots. Knotty Alder is most often found in rustic designed kitchens, furniture and paneling. That rustic character is a natural fit for the lodge and mountain-cabin look common across Montana homes.

For most working kitchens, the sweet spot sits in the middle. Cabinet or CAB grades deliver the best return, with a consistent, warm appearance and minimal waste. Push up to Superior grade when every face shows and you want flawless clear stock; drop to Premium, Rustic, or Knotty when you’re after farmhouse or lodge character.

For most residential door applications, Cabinet and CAB grades hit the sweet spot — blending appearance and efficiency, with the option to push toward rustic or refined finishes depending on stain.

Sizes, Thicknesses, and the Width Question

Alder comes in standard hardwood thicknesses, and it’s sold as dimension stock and lumber. Common rough thicknesses run 4/4, 6/4, and 8/4, and you’ll also find it as plywood and veneer.

The one constraint to plan around is width. The wood is rarely wider than 6 inches due to the small size of the trees. Alder trees are naturally smaller than many other hardwood trees, and thus widths and lengths available may be limited. If your design calls for wide solid panels, you’re edge-gluing narrow stock — plan for that in your layout rather than expecting a single wide board.

Working and Finishing It Right

Alder rates near the top for nearly every shop operation. On a 10-point scale, it scores 10 for machining, 10 for sanding, 10 for finishing, and 9 for gluing. The fine, closed grain means less sanding to get there, and its predictable density keeps tearout down compared to oak or maple.

One technique note worth respecting: alder is a soft, relatively low-strength, straight-grained, even-textured wood. It works well with hand and machine tools, but sharp cutting edges need to be maintained to prevent tearing the grain. Dull blades and soft wood don’t mix. Keep your edges sharp and the surface comes off clean.
