Duct Tape and Repair Tape

How to Match the Tape to the Job

Building Materials

Here’s the mistake that costs people money: grabbing a roll of cloth “duct tape” to seal actual ductwork. UL 181 prohibits standard duct tape for HVAC use. The cloth backing dries out, the adhesive hardens, and the seal lets go inside a year or two. For sealing rigid metal or flexible duct, you want UL 181-listed foil tape or mastic — not the silver cloth roll most folks reach for.

So before you buy, sort out what the job actually is. Sealing ducts is one category. General repairs, patching, and bundling are another. Stopping a water leak is a third. Each one calls for a different tape, and using the wrong one guarantees a callback.

Choosing the Right Tape by Job

For HVAC duct sealing, the marking on the roll is what matters. Select professional-grade foil tape with UL 181A-P for rigid duct or UL 181B-FX for flexible certification. These feature high-performance acrylic adhesives and metal backings that resist heat and puncturing. No marking, no HVAC use. And when you want a near-permanent seal, mastic sealant is often superior to tape for code-compliant HVAC sealing. Contractors pair mastic with mesh tape at the big joints and let it do the long-haul work.

For general repairs, cloth duct tape earns its keep. Gorilla Duct Tape is a double-thick, weather-resistant cloth tape designed for rough, uneven surfaces like wood, stone, or brick. The key thing to understand: it’s for temporary, non-structural fixes. Great for strapping, patching, and hauling. Not for ducts.

When the heavy lifting starts, there’s a stronger version. Ultimate Gorilla Tape is the strongest tape in the line — 5x stronger than original Gorilla Tape based on tensile strength. It cuts with a utility knife and smooths out pockets, with one loop holding 800+ lbs based on tensile testing. Use it on wood, stone, stucco, brick, metal, and vinyl, and lean on it for hauling, strapping, patching, building, and lifting. One caution worth knowing: it does not work on materials with high oil or plasticizer content, such as EPDM rubber or PVC — an acrylic tape like Crystal Clear Gorilla Tape is better suited for these.

That acrylic option covers the high-oil surfaces and the jobs where you want to see through the patch. Crystal Clear Gorilla Tape is a heavy-duty, all-purpose tape that’s weatherproof, airtight, crystal clear, and can be torn by hand. It gains additional strength over time, works best for patching with a single layer, but isn’t for patching inflatables at seams.

For stopping water, there’s a dedicated patch tape. At 4 inches wide, the Waterproof Patch & Seal Tape patches holes, cracks, gaps, and tears, even underwater — good for home, auto, marine, camping, RVs, and outdoors. Know its limits before you trust it: it’s not for use on seams, applications under pressure like garden hoses, or automotive applications under the hood, and may not adhere to silicone or water-repellent materials.

Sizes and Specs

These are the types and sizes in the Gorilla lineup, plus a high-temp flue tape from 3M. Match the width and length to your job — wider and longer for big patches and seams, smaller rolls for spot repairs.

A few notes on temperature, because it matters in Montana. Ultimate Gorilla Tape applies at 40°F to 120°F, best at room temperature. Crystal Clear works best between 10°F and 120°F. The lesson holds across all of them: apply at room temperature. Cold surfaces kill adhesion. In an unheated crawl space or attic in January, warm and clean the surface first or the bond won’t hold.

Installation Basics

Good tape applied wrong fails fast. Surface prep is the whole game. Ensure surfaces are clean, dry, and free of oil or dust. Then warm: apply at room temperature.

For foil tape on ducts, the technique is specific. Use the incremental peel method to avoid wrinkles, then burnish edges firmly with a flat tool or squeegee to activate the pressure-sensitive adhesive. Don’t stretch it as you lay it down — stretched tape pulls back toward its original length and lifts at the edges.

For the waterproof patch tape, the sequence is straightforward. Keep the liner on and cut the tape larger than the repair area, extending beyond all edges — overlapping tape may cause leaks, so round the corners to reduce lifting. Rub the entire surface aggressively, especially the edges, smoothing from center to outer edges. Then hold the patch in place for 2 minutes for good adhesion, and apply weight for 24 hours if possible. For underwater work, water must be pressed out from underneath the tape.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can regular duct tape seal my ductwork? No. UL 181 prohibits standard duct tape for HVAC use. For ducts, use foil tape carrying a UL 181A-P mark for rigid metal duct or UL 181B-FX for flexible duct, or use mastic sealant, which is often the superior choice for a permanent, code-compliant seal.

Why does cloth duct tape fail on ducts? The cloth backing and rubber adhesive don’t hold up to the heat and temperature cycling inside an HVAC system. Cloth duct tape is built for temporary, non-structural fixes — strapping, patching, bundling — not long-term sealing.

What’s the strongest tape for hauling and heavy repairs? Ultimate Gorilla Tape is 5x stronger than original Gorilla Tape based on tensile strength. One loop holds over 800 lbs and it grips wood, stone, stucco, brick, metal, and vinyl. Use more tape and extra wraps for heavier loads.

What tape works on PVC, EPDM, or other high-oil surfaces? Reach for an acrylic tape. Standard Ultimate Gorilla Tape does not work on high oil or plasticizer materials like EPDM rubber or PVC — Crystal Clear Gorilla Tape, an acrylic tape, may be better suited.

Will waterproof patch tape hold underwater? Yes, with prep. The 4-inch Waterproof Patch & Seal Tape can patch holes, cracks, gaps, and tears, even underwater. But it’s not for use on seams or applications under pressure like garden hoses.

Why won’t my tape stick in a cold crawl space? Cold surfaces ruin adhesion. Patch & seal tape is best applied at room temperature and will not adhere to cold surfaces. Warm and clean the surface before applying, then burnish firmly.

Can I paint over Gorilla waterproofing tape? No. The waterproofing tapes are not paintable.
