Two fasteners. Two completely different problems. Confuse them and the project fails.

Concrete screws bite into solid masonry. Drywall anchors twist into hollow wallboard. The mistake that wrecks more projects than any other is reaching for the wrong one — driving a hollow-wall anchor into a foundation, or hanging a heavy fixture on a fastener rated for far less. Match the fastener to the base material first. Everything else follows from that.

Concrete Screws: Built for Masonry, Demanding on Technique

These are the technique-sensitive ones. Get the hole wrong and the screw won’t hold.

Concrete screws are distinguished by a star-drive head that minimizes cam-out, serrated threads for aggressive cutting, and a Blue Ruspert coating suitable for exterior and ACQ-treated lumber. The star drive matters more than people think — it keeps the bit seated instead of stripping out when you’re leaning into a driver against concrete.

Diameters cover the common range. They are available in 3/16, 1/4, and 5/16 inch diameters in various lengths. Stainless steel options are also available for jobs where corrosion resistance has to be absolute. One detail that saves a trip back to the counter: each box includes the necessary carbide-tipped masonry drill bit and driver bit.

Here’s where most failures happen. Installation for concrete screws requires a hammer drill. You must drill a hole at least 1/4 inch deeper than the fastener length, clear all debris, and drive the screw until seated. Skip the hammer drill and you’ll burn the bit without making a usable hole. Skip clearing the debris and the screw bottoms out on dust instead of seating in solid material. That extra quarter inch of depth gives the cuttings somewhere to go.

For load-critical work, the tooling matters too. Proprietary installation tools are recommended to meet ICC report #ESR-5134 values.

Coatings: Match the Coating to the Exposure

Coating choice is what separates a fastener that lasts from one that rusts out in a season. In Montana, freeze-thaw cycling and moisture exposure on exterior masonry and decks are relentless on the wrong fastener.

The Blue Ruspert coating is suitable for exterior use and ACQ-treated lumber, while stainless steel options are available for the highest corrosion resistance. That ACQ note is the one to remember. Treated lumber — the stuff going into decks and ground-contact framing — is chemically hard on fasteners. A screw without a corrosion-rated coating fails early in that application. Blue Ruspert handles it. Stainless handles the worst of it.

Drywall Anchors: Light Loads, No Drill

Different substrate, different rules. Drywall anchors solve the hollow-wall problem — there’s no stud, just gypsum board with air behind it.

Drywall anchors are zinc-plated for corrosion resistance and designed for #6 or #8 screws. These allow for tool-free, twist-in installation and support up to 50 pounds. The zinc plating is sized for interior duty, which is where these belong.

The 50-pound rating is the line you don’t cross. Overloading hollow-wall anchors is the second most common mistake in this category. Match the anchor to the screw size — #6 or #8 — and respect the weight limit. Stay under it and the fastening holds. Push past it and the anchor pulls through the wallboard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a drywall anchor be used in concrete? No. Drywall anchors are designed for hollow gypsum board and twist in by hand. Solid masonry and concrete require a concrete screw driven into a pre-drilled, hammer-drilled pilot hole. The two are not interchangeable.

Why does the hole need to be deeper than the screw? Drilling at least 1/4 inch deeper than the fastener length gives the cutting debris somewhere to collect. If the hole is only as deep as the screw, the screw bottoms out on packed dust and never seats in solid material.

Do concrete screws need a hammer drill? Yes. Installing concrete screws requires a hammer drill to pre-drill the pilot hole. A standard drill won’t cut a clean, properly sized hole in masonry.

Which coating should be used for a deck built with treated lumber? Blue Ruspert coating is suitable for exterior use and ACQ-treated lumber. For the highest corrosion resistance in harsh exposure, stainless steel options are available. ACQ-treated lumber is hard on fasteners, so a corrosion-rated coating is essential to avoid premature failure.

How much weight will a drywall anchor hold? These zinc-plated anchors support up to 50 pounds and are designed for #6 or #8 screws. Stay under that rating — overloading is the most common reason hollow-wall anchors fail.

Do the screws come with the right drill bit? Many boxes include the matching carbide-tipped masonry drill bit and the driver bit, so the correct-diameter bit comes packaged with the fastener.
