Cement Board vs. Fiber-Reinforced Gypsum
Building MaterialsBefore you set tile in a Montana bathroom, kitchen, or mudroom, you need the right substrate underneath. Here’s the thing most folks searching for “drywall backing board” miss: it isn’t one material. It splits into two families that behave very differently. Get this choice wrong and you’re looking at a failed tile job or a stained vinyl floor down the road.
The two camps are Portland cement board and fiber-reinforced gypsum board. Cement board — Durock is the common name — is the one for wet walls and tile floors. Fiber-reinforced gypsum — Fiberock — is a uniform-composition panel that holds up in wet and dry areas alike and works under tile, vinyl, or paint. The deciding question is simple: does the area get wet, and what’s going on top?
Cement board is the workhorse for wet-area tile. Durock Brand Cement Board with EdgeGuard gives you a strong, water-durable tile backerboard for floors, walls, countertops, tub and shower areas, and exterior finish systems. The EdgeGuard piece matters on a jobsite — the patented edge performance prevents spinout and crumbling, which is exactly where lesser boards fall apart when you’re fastening near the perimeter. One handy detail: it doesn’t matter which side faces out. The dual surfaces — one smooth, one textured — are there to receive adhesive. The smooth side is ideal for mastic, the textured side for mortar, but either side works without compromising performance.
There’s also a lighter cement-board option. Durock Glass-Mat Tile Backerboard is a water-resistant panel for walls, floors, and ceilings, built on a treated water-resistant gypsum core with a coated fiberglass mat facer and back. It combines the tile bond of cement board with the handling and ease of use of a Sheetrock panel. At a nominal weight of 1.7 lb/sq ft, it’s the one to reach for when you want cement-board tile bond without breaking your back hauling sheets up a ladder.
Now the gypsum side. Fiberock is made of a uniquely uniform composition that creates a strong, mold-resistant product holding tough when wet. These panels have no paper face to delaminate, tear, or scratch. That no-paper construction is the durability story. Where Fiberock pulls ahead is versatility: it’s ideal under tile, stone, vinyl, hardwood flooring, laminate flooring, and carpeting. Critically for floors, it’s free of resins, adhesives, and solvents that might stain a vinyl floor, and it provides a smooth, flat, paintable surface for wall applications.
That last point is the line in the sand. Cement board is not your choice under vinyl. Fiberock is. And when you need a paintable transition from tile to wall, Fiberock handles both.
For full waterproofing, there’s a step up. Fiberock AquaSmart panels feature a homogenous waterproof composition engineered with proprietary waterproof technology, manufactured to meet ANSI 118.10 (Section 4.5) for waterproofness. It’s also an ideal substrate for painted wall surfaces when transitioning from tile to paint.
One thing all of these share: they score the highest achievable rating — 10 out of 10 — for mold resistance according to ASTM D3273. In a climate where bathrooms and mudrooms fight moisture half the year, that’s not a throwaway spec.
Thickness dictates application. This is where buyers trip up.
For Durock Glass-Mat, the 5/8” Type X panels are UL classified as fire resistant, and the spec sheet lists 1/2” x 4’ x 8’ and 5/8” x 4’ x 8’ sizes. Panel sizes run 48 in. x 5–10 ft. and 48 in. x 84.25 in., with a square edge. The Glass-Mat panel also exceeds ASTM C1178, the standard specification for coated glass-mat water-resistant gypsum backing panels.

The 1/4-inch boards are floor and countertop material. They’re not for walls. The 1/2-inch handles walls and most tile work.
For the EdgeGuard cement board specifically: it comes in 1/2 in. thickness, 3 ft. x 4–6 ft. panels, with a round edge and Portland cement composition, carrying a UL Type DCB designation.
On the gypsum side, Fiberock comes in 1/2 in and 5/8 in thicknesses across 3 ft and 4 ft widths. The AquaSmart waterproof version runs 0.42 in thick in 4 ft x 8 ft panels with a square edge and a Class A fire rating.
Framing first. For wall application, fasten the backerboard to framing with specified fasteners, spacing them a maximum 8” o.c. for walls and 6” o.c. for ceilings, with perimeter fasteners at least 3/8” and less than 5/8” from ends and edges. Drive fasteners into the field of the panels first, working toward ends and edges, holding the panels in firm contact with framing while driving.
Use the right fastener. Fasten with 1-1/4” Durock Brand Tile Backer Screws for wood framing, or 1-1/2” hot-dipped galvanized roofing nails. The corrosion resistance is what keeps fasteners from rusting out in a wet wall. Drive nails and screws so the bottoms of the heads sit flush with the panel surface — do not overdrive. An overdriven head crushes the substrate and loses its grip.
Panel layout matters too. Install backerboard with ends and edges closely abutted but not forced together, and stagger end joints in successive courses. Forcing panels tight invites cracking; staggering joints keeps the assembly from telegraphing seams through the tile.
For floors, you need a sound subfloor underneath. Laminate the Glass-Mat backerboard to the subfloor using Type 1 organic adhesive or latex-modified thin-set mortar suitable for bonding cement board, then fasten it down with screws spaced 8” o.c. in both directions. Finish the joints right: prefill joints with tile-setting mortar or adhesive, then immediately embed the Tile Backer Tape and level.
Two Montana-specific notes worth heeding. First, the cold. During installation, building temperatures should stay between 40 and 100°F, with adequate ventilation to carry off excess moisture — low temperatures and high humidity stretch out the time needed. That’s a real consideration through most of the building season here. Second, let your framing acclimate. Wood framing should approximate the moisture content it’ll reach in service — let the enclosed building stand as long as possible before applying the backerboard. These panels aren’t meant for constant exposure to water; protect them from immersion and cascading water.
Cutting is straightforward — score and snap with a utility knife. But protect your lungs. The dust can carry silica, so wear a NIOSH-approved mask and eye protection.
Warranty length is one of the cleaner ways to compare these boards. The Durock Glass-Mat Tile Backerboard carries a 20-Year Limited Warranty. The EdgeGuard cement board is warranted for interior and exterior applications.
On the standards side, the Glass-Mat board is rated as a tile substrate for wet areas Res1 through Res3 and Com1 through Com3 as defined by the Tile Council of North America Handbook. The Fiberock AquaSmart waterproofing claim is tied to ANSI 118.10 (Section 4.5). Both Fiberock and the EdgeGuard cement board carry GREENGUARD certification for low-emission performance.
Can cement board go under a vinyl floor? No. For vinyl flooring, reach for fiber-reinforced gypsum. Fiberock is free of resins, adhesives, and solvents that might stain a vinyl floor, and it’s made for use under tile, stone, vinyl, hardwood, laminate, and carpeting.
Does it matter which side of the cement board faces out? No. Regardless of which side faces out, you get the same performance. The two surfaces exist to match your adhesive — the smooth side is ideal for mastic because it increases adhesive coverage, and the textured side is ideal for mortar because it enhances bonding and reduces tile slip.
What thickness do I use on walls versus floors? The 1/4-inch boards are for floors and countertops. Walls and ceilings call for 1/2-inch or thicker. The 5/8” Type X panels are UL classified as fire resistant where a fire-rated assembly is required.
Can I use drywall screws and joint tape? Use the fasteners and tape made for backerboard. Tile Backer Screws or 1-1/2” hot-dipped galvanized roofing nails are the call, and joints get prefilled with mortar or adhesive and Tile Backer Tape embedded — not standard drywall tape.
Is backerboard mold-resistant? Yes. These panels score the highest achievable rating, 10 out of 10, for mold resistance according to ASTM D3273.
