How to Pick the Right One

The most common reason a bond fails isn’t bad workmanship. It’s grabbing the wrong category off the shelf. Before worrying about brand or cartridge size, answer one question: does the job need structural strength, or does it need to move? To choose the right product, first categorize your need: do you require structural strength (adhesives) or movement accommodation (sealants)? Get that wrong and nothing downstream matters.

This guide is for framers, remodelers, and DIY builders deciding between construction adhesives, cement-based patch and underlayment, and concrete bonding agents. Three different product families. Three different jobs.

Matching Chemistry to the Job

Construction adhesives bond structural materials and hold. The strength numbers aren’t marketing fluff. Professional-grade lines run from products that are 3x stronger than traditional adhesives up to 8x stronger, bonding wood, concrete, plywood, OSB, MDF, treated wood, stone, masonry, brick, foamboard insulation, and metal. For framing, subfloor, stairs, railings, and deck work, that’s the family you want.

Here’s the part that matters for a Montana shoulder season. Certain construction adhesives are ideal for subfloor installations, water-resistant, can be applied directly to wet and frozen surfaces without shrinking, and cure in cold temperatures. When you’re racing to close in before freeze, that’s a real edge over products that quit below 50°F.

Different chemistries solve different problems:

  • Epoxy — highest structural strength and chemical resistance.
  • Polyurethane / MS polymers — flexibility and gap-filling; MS polymers are increasingly preferred for their universal compatibility and paintability.
  • Silicone — best for wet areas and glass due to its superior movement capability.

A note on how elastic adhesives behave compared to screws and nails. A big advantage of elastic adhesives over traditional mechanical fixing with screws or nails is the larger fixing area and consequently, a far more homogeneous and uniform distribution of any load or stress. The trade-off? The only disadvantage is the lack of penetration depth compared to screw fixing, and therefore the need for sufficient surface strength of the elements being joined plus good adhesion for a durable, strong bond.

Cement patch and underlayment — not an adhesive

Don’t confuse these with glue. They’re polymer-modified cement products for smoothing and leveling subfloors. A fast-setting, polymer-modified, cement-based compound provides a smooth finish to interior and exterior subfloors prior to floor covering. Mixed with water, it patches and levels concrete or plywood as thick as 1/2 inch. Turnaround is quick — install new flooring in just 60 to 90 minutes, with a smooth finish that feathers from edge to 1/2 inch thick. Standard mix is 1 gallon of clean, cool water to a 25 lb bag.

Know the limits before you trowel. Do not bond this type directly to hardwood, lauan plywood, particleboard, parquet, cushion or sponge back vinyl flooring, metal, fiberglass, plastic, or OSB panels. And watch the thermometer — do not use when temperature is below 50°F (10°C). Going over existing concrete? Concrete must be cured 28 days and accept water penetration.

Bonding Fresh Cement to Old Concrete

This trips people up constantly. Fresh wet concrete does not normally bond well to existing dry concrete. Portland cement concrete works well in mass and provides great compressive strength, but not bond. You’ve got two ways to fix that.

Mechanical — the scratch coat. The most effective way to ensure a really good bond is a scratch coat: a very wet coat made by mixing the repair product with water to a soupy consistency. Using a gloved hand or rag, smear the material onto the area to be patched. It is not necessary for the scratch coat to dry — by the time you get the repair material mixed it will be ready. Then mix additional repair material to the proper consistency and apply over this thin scratch coat.

Chemical — a liquid bonding agent. Paint the bonder onto the existing concrete and allow it to dry until tacky, which usually takes only a few minutes, then apply the repair material. The most effective way to get the bonding agent into the existing concrete is to apply it directly with a brush or rag. Acrylic latex admixtures do similar work — these are formulated to improve the adhesion of screeds, renders, patching and repair mortars to concrete and cement-sand substrates, running approximately 0.2 kg/m² for adhesive slurries, bonding aid, and key coats.

Here’s the mistake that quietly ruins a patch: doubling up the polymers. Do not use products that already contain polymers to aid bonding with a separate liquid bonding agent — they already include polymers and should never be paired with a separate bonding agent. Using a bonding agent on an already-polymer-modified product can actually act as a bond breaker.

Surface Prep and Temperature — Where Most Failures Start

Almost every failed bond traces back to a dirty surface or working outside the temperature window. Both are avoidable.

On contamination, there’s no negotiating. Concrete simply will not bond to all substances — paint, oil, and glue from old flooring tiles are a few. You must mechanically remove these materials if you want the job to last. Any old paint still hanging on is going to be a guaranteed bond breaker. Oil and tree sap are the worst offenders because both work their way down into the concrete, and simply washing the surface isn’t sufficient.

Temperature ranges run tight on most of these products. Polyurethane wood adhesives generally apply between 5 and 35°C, and should not be applied at temperatures below +5°C. That’s the line that matters during Montana’s cold months — which is exactly why a cold-tolerant construction adhesive earns its place when you’re fighting the calendar.

Wood Flooring and Subfloor Adhesives

Wood floors get their own product class for a reason: a water-based glue can warp the planks. Hybrid polymer floor adhesives sidestep that. They’re 100% active and water-free, so they won’t cause warpage or curl of wood blocks and planks. They’re permanently flexible, compensating for subfloor movement, and suitable for use with underfloor heating. This type bonds wood directly to concrete, wood, metal, ceramic tile, vinyl, marble, granite, and most natural stone floors.

Moisture is the make-or-break number here, and it’s especially relevant for basements and slab-on-grade floors. Allow 28 days maturing and max 3% moisture content before using this adhesive. Over that threshold? For moisture contents at 3.1 to 7%, use in conjunction with a moisture-barrier primer; do not use the product above these recommended moisture levels. Basement and below-ground floors must be adequately protected with a damp-proof course and two coats of primer applied as directed. And the prep rule holds: surfaces to be glued must be sound, clean, dry, and free from dust, grease, and other contaminants.

A few specialty roofing and flashing sealants round out the patch-and-bond category — roof cement in 11 oz and gallon sizes, wet/dry formulas, plus through-the-roof sealants in 10 oz tubes, quart, and gallon, available in black and white.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use construction adhesive on a wet or frozen surface? Some can. Certain construction adhesives are water-resistant, can be used outdoors and in high humidity, and can be applied to wet and frozen surfaces. These cure in cold temperatures and won’t shrink when applied to wet and frozen surfaces. Always confirm the specific product handles it before counting on it.

Why won’t my concrete patch stick to the old slab? Because cement doesn’t naturally bond to cured concrete. Fresh wet concrete does not normally bond well to existing dry concrete.
