A caster is the whole rolling assembly, not just the wheel. It’s a complete rolling unit — wheel, axle, bearing, fork, and mount — that bolts to the bottom of equipment so it can move. The wheel is one component inside it. Without the fork and mount, a wheel cannot be attached to a cart and cannot swivel. Get that distinction straight and the rest of the buying decision gets simpler.
Here’s the rule that saves headaches at the parts counter: if the part swivels, it’s a caster. If it only rolls, it might be just a wheel. A skateboard has wheels (no swivel). An office chair has casters (each one swivels independently). That matters when you order. If your cart’s wheels are worn but the swivel and frame are fine, you order replacement wheels. If the swivel is seized, the bearing is shot, or the fork is bent, you order replacement casters.
Picking the right one isn’t a shopping task. It’s an engineering decision. Run the six variables in order — load per caster, wheel material matched to floor and chemistry, bearing type, swivel rig construction, floor condition, and travel profile. Skip one and you’re buying a commodity wheel with a sticker on it.
Every caster — the cheap furniture one and the heavy forged-steel unit alike — is built from the same parts. The caster is the entire assembly — wheel plus mount — not just the wheel itself. The pieces that matter for ordering: the mount is how the caster attaches to your equipment. Two families exist: plate casters use a flat steel plate with four bolt holes, and stem casters use a vertical post — threaded, grip-ring, or expanding — that drops into a socket. Plate is stronger; stem is faster to install and more compact.
Rotation splits into four main types. Swivel casters feature a swivel mechanism that allows the caster to rotate 360 degrees, providing excellent maneuverability. These casters are ideal for equipment that needs to change direction frequently. Rigid casters are designed to only move in a straight line, offering stability and support. These are ideal for applications where equipment needs to move in a fixed direction.
Then there’s locking. Locking casters offer the combined benefits of mobility and stability. Equipped with a locking mechanism, these casters can be fixed to prevent movement, ensuring safety when needed. For heavy industrial work, the fourth type earns its keep — kingpinless designs handle more shock load and are the standard for heavy-duty industrial use.
Capacity spans a wide range. Casters are categorized by mount type (top plate or stem), rotation (swivel or rigid), and load rating, and they range in capacity from about 75 lb to over 10,000 lb per caster.
One thing to verify before you order anything: casters are not universal — they are matched by top-plate bolt pattern, stem thread, wheel diameter, and load rating.
This is where most people get it wrong, and it’s the one that wrecks a floor. Certain caster wheel materials are not appropriate on specific floor types. The floor the caster wheel rolls on dictates the caster’s appropriateness for the job. Using an improper caster wheel on a given floor type can lead to caster disaster.
Polyurethane is the workhorse. Polyurethane on steel runs 95A durometer, carries 600 to 2,500 lb, is quiet, non-marking, and floor-friendly. The default industrial choice. On a finished surface, that’s your answer: on epoxy, urethane, or sealed concrete, default to 95A polyurethane. It carries 1,500 to 2,500 lb on 4 to 6 inch wheels and protects the coating.
Cast iron carries the most but punishes coated and wood floors. Cast iron handles 1,000 to 10,000 lb — maximum load on smooth concrete. It destroys coated or wood floors. For the rough, gravel, and asphalt conditions common around Montana shops and yards, rubber on air is the shock absorber: pneumatic rubber carries 250 to 1,000 lb, absorbs shock, and works for outdoor and rough surface applications.

Those temperature ranges matter in an unheated garage, barn, or shop that sees hard winter cold. Match the rating to the conditions the equipment actually sits in.
Now the load math — the part people under-spec constantly. Load per caster = (gross cart weight ÷ number of load-bearing casters) × 1.33 dynamic safety factor. For four-caster carts, only three carry load on uneven floors, so divide by three, not four. That floating-caster reality is exactly why you don’t divide by four.
The safety factor scales with how rough the work is. A safety factor of 1.33 is the ICWM minimum. Aerospace, defense, and medical spec 1.5x to 2.0x. Rougher floors and impact loads push it higher. And never cut it close on the rating: never rate at nameplate capacity. That is the failure point, not the working load.
Bigger wheels roll easier and clear obstacles. The greater the wheel diameter and width, the greater the load capacity. This makes it easier to roll your equipment and also reduces the noise level produced by the wheels.
For configuration, the proven setup is a mix. Rigid casters are typically paired with swivel casters to balance maneuverability and stability. Two swivel, two rigid. Add a lock if the unit has to stay put — casters with brakes offer added stability by allowing users to lock the wheels in place. This is especially beneficial for equipment that needs to remain stationary during use or when loading and unloading items.
Western Building Center carries swivel casters in TPR and rubber across 2-inch, 2-1/2-inch, 4-inch, and 5-inch wheel sizes, plus plate casters in smaller 1-1/4-inch and 1-5/8-inch sizes. There’s also a 3-inch Shepherd Hardware swivel caster rated at 225 lb on a polypropylene housing, and an adjustable appliance roller rated to 3,000 lb.
Not everything needs to roll. For furniture that mostly stays put, cups and pads do the protecting. Shepherd Hardware furniture cups come as protective supports and feet under furniture — rubber, plastic, felt, and carpet-base styles, some spiked or non-slip, many in 4-packs. They run in sizes from roughly 1-1/2 inch up to 2-3/8 inch.
Match the cup to the floor underneath. Spiked cups grip carpet. Carpet-base cups are built for carpeted floors. Felt and non-slip styles protect hard floors. For the felt option, these caster cups protect hardwood, carpet, and tile against dents and scratches, are ideal for rolling chairs, stools, tables, and desk drawer units, and use slightly raised walls to keep pieces exactly where you want them. Best part — no adhesive. Installing them is as easy as placing them underneath caster wheels. They keep rolling in place without adhesive so you can use them over and over again.

What’s the difference between a wheel and a caster? A wheel is a single round part that rotates on an axle. A caster is the full assembly that holds and steers that wheel. If the part swivels 360 degrees, it’s a caster. If it only rolls in place on a shaft, it’s just a wheel.
How do I figure out the load rating I need? Take the gross loaded weight, divide by three (not four), and multiply by a safety factor. For four-caster carts, only three carry load on uneven floors, so divide by three, not four. Use 1.33 as the ICWM minimum, and 1.5x to 2.0x for tougher duty. Bump it higher for uneven floors and impacts, and never spec right at the nameplate number.

Plate casters mount using a flat, rectangular plate with four bolts, suitable for heavy-duty applications, and the broad plate ensures even weight distribution. Stem casters insert into a socket or hole, are used in office furniture, medical equipment, and light-duty carts, and can be easily replaced or upgraded. Whichever you pick, the bolt pattern or stem thread has to match the frame exactly.
What works for outdoor or gravel use? Air-filled rubber. Pneumatic rubber absorbs shock and is made for outdoor and rough surface applications. The cushion handles bumps and uneven ground far better than a hard tread.
How do I keep a rolling chair from scratching hardwood? Set it in felt caster cups. These furniture pads prevent casters from scratching and denting floors and are ideal for rolling chairs, stools, tables, and desk drawer units, with slightly raised walls to keep rolling furniture stationary.
