A Buyer's Guide to Wide-Format Gypsum Board
Building MaterialsHalf-inch drywall is the workhorse thickness for interior walls and ceilings. The 54-inch width is the part worth slowing down for. A 54 in. x 12 ft. panel is built for one job: covering a 9-foot wall in two horizontal courses instead of three. Fewer seams. Less taping. A cleaner wall when the mud dries.
That’s the whole pitch behind going wide. Standard board runs 48 inches, which leaves a third strip to hang and finish on a 9-foot wall. Run 54-inch board horizontally and the height is covered in two passes. The trade-off is weight and wrestling a 12-foot sheet into place — which is exactly why the core type you pick matters as much as the dimensions.
All of these panels share the same basic build. The noncombustible gypsum core is encased in 100% recycled face and back papers, and the face paper is folded around the long edges to reinforce and protect the core. The ends are cut square and even, while the long edges are tapered, allowing joints to be reinforced and concealed with joint treatment systems. All of them comply with ASTM C1396, Standard Specification for Gypsum Board, for 1/2 in. (12.7 mm) gypsum wallboard.

UltraLight is the lightweight standard for non-rated walls and ceilings. These 1/2 inch gypsum panels feature proprietary core and paper technologies, resulting in a high strength-to-weight ratio composite design. They’re also engineered to have superior sag resistance, eliminating the need for traditional 1/2 inch sag-resistant ceiling panels. At a nominal weight of 1.25 lb/sq ft, it’s the easiest of the three to haul up a ladder and hold to a ceiling. Western Building Center carries this one in the 1/2″ 54″ × 12′ size.
UltraLight Tough is the same lightweight panel built to take more abuse. It’s engineered for enhanced durability to reduce damage and waste on the job, with more robust edges and corners, minimizing damage during transportation, delivery, handling, and installation. It also carries a Class A fire rating and is ICC Evaluation Service compliant for ceiling installations, ESR-3365. Worth it on jobs where panels get knocked around or where you’re tired of replacing dinged corners.
Firecode C is the one you reach for when an assembly calls for a fire rating. These are enhanced proprietary Type X panels with a noncombustible gypsum core encased in 100% recycled face and back papers. The panels are UL Classified for fire resistance and can be used in any UL Design in which Type C panels are listed. On the face along the long edge of each panel, the UL Type Designation is printed for easy identification by building inspectors. They run heavier — a nominal weight of 2 lb/sq ft — and earn their keep in mechanical rooms, multi-family residential and condos, stairways and elevator shafts.
One thing to be clear about: read the fire rating right. There is no rating on a board by itself. Fire ratings are allocated only to systems. The board is one part of a tested assembly, not a rating on its own.

Note the last column. None of these carry moisture resistance. Bathrooms, laundry rooms, and any wet wall need a mold-tough or moisture-resistant product instead — that’s not what these panels are built for.
Estimating is straightforward math. A 54-inch by 12-foot panel covers 54 square feet. Take your total wall and ceiling area, divide by the panel coverage, and you’ve got your count. One caution worth repeating: that estimate doesn’t include an allowance for waste. Add your own cuts, offcuts, and damage cushion on top.
The wide format pays off at the taping stage. Gypsum panels can be installed horizontally or vertically. Installing the board horizontally lessens the total amount of joints to be taped by 25%. That’s the entire reason 54-inch board exists — fewer joints to finish on a 9-foot wall.
Get the framing and fasteners right or the joints crack later. Use 24-inch on-center framing maximum for both walls and ceilings. For attachment, secure panels with 1-1/4 inch Type W bugle head screws. On screw spacing into wood and steel, the spacing is 12 inches on ceilings and 16 inches for walls.
Keep the panels tight to each other. The maximum space allowed between panels is 1/8 of an inch. Any space larger can lead to problems with joint finishing cracking. Hang loose and you’ll pay for it in cracked seams.
Gypsum board and moisture don’t mix, and that’s a real concern when panels sit in an unheated space or a job that isn’t dried in yet. The rule is simple: Sheetrock Brand Gypsum Panels must be protected from exposure to excessive or continuous moisture and the elements before, during, and after installation. Storing outdoors uncovered is not recommended.
Keep it off the ground, keep it covered, keep it dry. There’s a temperature ceiling too: these panels can withstand temperatures up to 125°F. Not usually a problem in a Montana winter, but worth knowing around heaters and tight unventilated spaces.
Why choose 54-inch-wide board over standard 48-inch? The 54-inch width is purpose-built for 9-foot wall heights. Installing board horizontally lessens the total amount of joints to be taped by 25% — on a 9-foot wall, that means two courses instead of three, with fewer seams to finish.
Are these panels fire-rated? Only the Firecode C panel carries a fire rating. It’s UL Classified for fire resistance and can be used in any UL Design in which Type C panels are listed. Standard UltraLight is non-rated, though UltraLight Tough carries a Class A surface-burning rating. Remember: there is no rating on a board by itself — fire ratings are allocated only to systems.
Can I use these panels in a bathroom or basement? Not as a moisture barrier. None of these panels carry moisture resistance. Wet areas need a moisture- or mold-resistant product. For a dry, finished basement these work fine, but anywhere water or steam is present, choose the right panel.
What screws and spacing should I use? Use 1-1/4 inch Type W bugle head screws. When screwing into wood and steel framing, the spacing is 12 inches on ceilings and 16 inches for walls. Frame at 24-inch on-center maximum for both walls and ceilings.
How many panels do I need? Divide your total area by the panel coverage — a 54-inch by 12-foot sheet covers 54 square feet. Then add your own waste allowance, since the standard estimate doesn’t include an allowance for waste.
Can I store drywall in an unheated garage or shed? Keep it covered and off the ground. Panels must be protected from excessive or continuous moisture and the elements before, during, and after installation, and storing outdoors uncovered is not recommended. A dry, enclosed space works; an open lean-in through a wet spring does not.
