Festool Domino Joinery System

The Festool Domino creates mortise-and-tenon joints faster than any traditional method. It serves as a true floating tenon in mortise-and-tenon applications like furniture and cabinetmaking. The system combines a specialized power tool with precision-milled hardwood tenons to deliver structural joints that outperform dowels and biscuits.

Technical Superiority

DOMINO tenons provide more surface area for glue and prevent rotation compared to standard round dowels. That’s the core advantage. Round dowels allow pieces to twist during assembly. Biscuits provide alignment but minimal structural strength. DOMINO tenons provide structural strength (mortise and tenon) whereas biscuits are primarily for alignment.

The tenons themselves feature smart engineering. The flat, elongated shape prevents rotation, ensuring perfect alignment for edge and face gluing. Embossed glue pockets and longitudinal grooves provide a secure grip and space for glue distribution. These aren’t just rectangular sticks of wood. The surface texturing creates mechanical lock and optimal glue flow.

High strength and dimensional stability for structural joints makes these suitable for load-bearing applications. Not decorative joinery. Real structural work.

Domino Tenon Specifications

Specification8x100mm Tenons
MaterialAll-natural, solid Beech hardwood
Diameter8 mm (5/16”)
Nominal Length100 mm (4”)
Actual LengthApproximately 98 mm (shorter to allow space for glue)
Quantity150 per pack
CertificationFSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified

The actual length being 2mm shorter than nominal isn’t a manufacturing defect. It’s intentional. Cut mortises to the appropriate depth (the tenon is ~98mm, so roughly 50mm on each side with a slight gap for glue). That gap prevents bottoming out and ensures proper glue distribution.

Beech tenons are for interior applications; Sipo tenons are weatherproof, insect-, and mold-resistant for exterior use. Don’t use beech tenons on outdoor projects. They’ll fail. Sipo costs more but survives Montana weather.

Real-World Applications

Applications include furniture manufacturing, cabinetmaking, door and frame construction, edge and face gluing (alignment and strength), heavy-duty table bases and legs, and restoration and antique furniture replication.

The heavy-duty table base application deserves emphasis. Traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery takes hours per joint. The Domino creates the same structural connection in minutes. For Montana’s timber frame builders working with reclaimed lumber, this bridges old-world joinery with modern efficiency.

The Festool DOMINO XL DF 700 handles the 8x100mm tenons. Installation involves selecting the 8mm cutter, marking layout lines on both pieces, cutting mortises to appropriate depth, applying glue to the tenon and/or mortise, then inserting the tenon and clamping until the glue cures.

Reviews show consistently high praise for precision, ease of use, and the strength of the resulting joints. Users often mention the high cost but justify it by the time saved and joint quality. That’s the Festool trade-off. Premium pricing for measurable time savings and superior results.

Festool’s ‘Warranty all-inclusive’ includes three-year wear-and-tear coverage, free repair, and theft protection, provided the product is registered via MyFestool within 30 days of purchase. Three years of wear coverage matters when you’re billing by the hour.

FAQ

What makes Domino tenons stronger than dowels? The flat, elongated shape prevents rotation while providing more glue surface area than round dowels. Dowels allow twist during assembly. Domino tenons lock the alignment.

Are beech tenons suitable for outdoor projects? No. Beech tenons are for interior applications; Sipo tenons are weatherproof, insect-, and mold-resistant for exterior use. Beech will rot outdoors.

Why are the tenons 98mm when labeled as 100mm? They’re approximately 98mm (shorter to allow space for glue). The 2mm difference creates necessary glue gaps and prevents bottoming out in the mortise.

What’s included in a pack of 8x100mm tenons? 150 pieces of Beech DOMINO Tenons 8x100mm per pack. All FSC certified.

Which Domino tool works with these 8mm tenons? The Festool DOMINO XL DF 700 uses the 8mm cutters for these tenons.
