How to Choose the Right Profile, Size, and Material

A house needs a roof and siding to keep the furniture dry. A house also needs rain gutters to keep slabs, basements, and crawlspaces drier by directing water away from the structure. Gutters reduce the moisture load on siding, windows, and doors, which in turn increases the life span of exterior finishes. In a climate that swings from spring snowmelt to August downpours, that moisture management matters more than most people give it credit for.

The first decision is profile. The second is size. Get the size wrong and the bill shows up years later — not as a puddle, but as rot. The first sign of undersized gutters is not water pouring over the edge during a storm. It is the soft, discolored wood behind the gutter — fascia board that has been absorbing splash-back and overflow for months or years. By the time you notice the paint bubbling or the fascia flexing under finger pressure, the rot has often spread into the rafter tails and roof sheathing behind it.

That damage compounds. Right-sized gutters protect the fascia and rafter tails behind them — and repairing rotted framing is a far bigger job than hanging the gutters that would have prevented it.

Profiles: K-Style, Half-Round, and Wood

Two profiles cover nearly every residential job. K-style (also called ogee or OG) gutters have a flat back and a decorative front profile that resembles crown molding. The flat back mounts flush against the fascia board. K-style gutters carry more water than half-round gutters of the same width because their flat bottom and angular sides create a deeper, more rectangular cross-section. That capacity advantage plus the easy mounting is why K-style gutters dominate the US residential market (roughly 80% of installations) because they carry more water per inch of width and their flat back simplifies mounting.

Half-round is the other option. Half-round gutters are a semicircular trough. They carry less water than K-style at the same width but drain more cleanly — debris does not catch on interior corners because there are none. Half-round gutters are the standard on historic homes and are increasingly popular on modern designs for their clean aesthetic. If you’re restoring a Craftsman or Victorian, the half-round profile is part of the architecture, not an afterthought — their symmetrical, open-trough design mimics the look of traditional crown molding. While K-style gutters are designed to blend into the trim, half-round systems are meant to be seen. They provide a sophisticated “shadow line” at the roof’s edge.

Wood gutters still exist for the right project. Wooden gutters come in 4x5 and 4x6 Douglas Fir. Fiberglass and PVC fiber-gutters round out the alternatives to metal.

Sizing: 5-Inch vs 6-Inch

Sizing isn’t a guess. It’s a drainage-capacity problem. Gutter sizing is a drainage capacity problem. You need gutters that can handle the volume of water your roof collects during peak rainfall — not average rainfall, but the heaviest downpour your region experiences in a typical year.

What matters is the horizontal footprint of the roof, not its surface area. The drainage area is not the same as the roof surface area. It is the horizontal projection — the footprint of the roof as seen from directly above. A roof with a steep pitch has more surface area than a shallow roof, but both collect the same amount of rain per horizontal square foot because rain falls vertically. For gutter sizing, use the horizontal projection.

Montana sits on the lower end of the rainfall-intensity scale. The Mountain West typically runs 1.5-3.0 in/hr (Denver, Salt Lake City, Boise). That means a 5-inch K-style is often enough for a moderate roof here — but steep pitches and large catchment areas still push you up a size.

The 5-inch K-style is the standard residential size — it handles most single-story and moderate two-story roofs in all but the highest-rainfall regions. The 6-inch K-style handles up to 7,960 sq ft at 1 in/hr, or 1,990 sq ft at 4 in/hr. It’s used for large roofs, steep pitches, and high-rainfall areas. Required for most commercial buildings.

When the numbers land borderline, size up. If drainage area is borderline for 5” gutters, prefer 6” gutters. They provide roughly 40-50% more capacity. That’s the easiest insurance you’ll ever buy against fascia rot.

The System: Downspouts, Hangers, and Fittings

A gutter is only half the system. The downspouts carry the load. Downspouts come in two standard sizes: 2 in. by 3 in. and 3 in. by 4 in. The amount and type of annual rainfall are factors in the downspout size you choose. Capacity scales fast: in general, a 2-in. by 3-in. downspout can drain 600 sq. ft. of roof area, and a 3-in. by 4-in. downspout can drain 1200 sq. ft. Larger downspouts are less likely to clog, and the upsize is modest.

Match your outlets to your downspouts. Outlets are sized 2 in. by 3 in. or 3 in. by 4 in., and match the downspout. The fittings you’ll pull together include A-type and B-type elbows, inside and outside miters, and left- and right-hand end caps. A-type elbows direct the downspout to the corner board below; the B-type orients to the narrow downspout section. For each run of gutter, you’ll need a right-hand and left-hand end cap.

Buy the whole system from one source. It’s a good idea to get everything you need from one source. The reason is fit: even though gutter profiles look the same, slight differences in the color and shape of end caps, miters, expansion joints, and splices can make assembly frustrating when parts are purchased separately.

On hangers, one rule is non-negotiable: both options must be cast from the same metal as the gutter itself to prevent galvanic corrosion, a chemical reaction that can prematurely age even the finest materials. For heavier metals, plan more support. Copper and G90 steel are significantly heavier than aluminum; they require more substantial support to prevent sagging under ice or debris loads. In snow country, that ice-and-debris load is not theoretical. Aluminum hardware — hidden hangers and snap-lok brackets among them — covers most standard K-style work.

Installation: Slope, Spacing, and Layout

Pitch determines whether a gutter drains or pools. You don’t need much. There’s no need to slope the gutter as much as you would a plumbing drain. A slight pitch drains most of the water, and the small amount that adheres to the metal dries when the weather changes. The working range runs from about 1/8 inch to 1 inch of drop per 10 feet, with a quarter inch per 10 feet a common target. For heavy-gauge metal, space hangers every 32 inches to support materials like copper, tightening to around 24 inches where loads run higher.

Don’t eyeball the pitch against the fascia unless you know it’s dead level. Watch installers hang gutters by eyeing their pitch against the fascia — a method that works provided that the fascia is level. Better to use a laser level to check the eaves on older homes so you avoid low spots where water can puddle. With a pole-mounted laser, make level marks at 10-ft. to 15-ft. intervals along the fascia and snap a level chalkline for reference.

Plan downspout locations before you cut a single length. Planning the layout of gutters and downspouts helps you avoid misplaced outlets and miscut gutter lengths. Begin by establishing downspout locations. Corner boards are the natural place for downspouts; they’re less obtrusive and are mounted more simply than over lap siding. On long runs, double up: on any longer length of gutter (20 ft. or more), two downspouts are always better than one. They can handle more water volume, and in the event that one clogs, the other can keep water moving.

On the gutter stock itself, seamless beats sectional. Ten-ft. lengths are common at home centers or lumberyards. But having gutters roll-formed on site into exact lengths means you don’t have to join several short lengths together. Splices have the potential to leak, and they take more time to hang than a single long gutter. If you go seamless, have gutters cut a few inches longer than you need. The cutting shear on the roll-former sometimes puts a small kink near the end of the gutter, but this and other defects can be trimmed away when you cut the gutters to their final length.
