Messmer's UV+ Driftwood Gray: Oil-Based Penetrating Stain

Messmer’s UV+ Driftwood Gray is an oil-based, penetrating, semi-transparent stain that uses a high solids formulation (without relying on wax) to protect exterior wood. The Driftwood Gray color provides a modern weathered look that’s become popular on everything from mountain home decks to backyard fences.

Worth it for contractors who want a stain that won’t peel, crack, or flake like film-forming products do. The penetrating formula eliminates the need for stripping or sanding during maintenance — just clean, brighten, and recoat. Skip it if you’re looking for solid color coverage or a glossy finish. The Penetrating Advantage

Unlike film-forming stains that sit on top of wood, Messmer’s penetrating formula prevents peeling, cracking, and flaking. That’s the difference between a maintenance nightmare and a straightforward recoat job. Film-forming stains like Cabot’s solid/semi-solid products require sanding or stripping when they inevitably start peeling. With Messmer’s, you clean the surface with their Part A cleaner, brighten with Part B if you’re dealing with cedar or redwood tannins, then apply a fresh coat.

The high solids content does the heavy lifting here. Rather than using wax for water repellency like some competitors, Messmer’s fills wood pores with solids. Those solids carry the UV absorbers and fungicides deep into the wood fiber where they belong — not sitting vulnerable on the surface.

Application Specs and Coverage

SpecificationValue
Coverage (rough wood)100-150 sq ft/gallon
Coverage (smooth wood)150-250 sq ft/gallon
Initial dry time24 hours
Rain resistance24-48 hours
Application temperature40°F to 90°F surface temp
VOC level250 g/L (Low-VOC)
Viscosity15-18 seconds (No. 2 Zahn cup)

That 40°F minimum surface temperature works for Montana’s construction season. You’re not waiting for 50°F like some stains require. The coverage numbers are honest — rough-sawn cedar siding will eat up more product than smooth deck boards.

Apply thin even coats. Avoid over-application to prevent tacky or shiny areas. Wipe off excess if it doesn’t penetrate within 30 minutes. That last bit matters. Pooled stain that can’t soak in will stay tacky and collect dirt. Natural-bristle brushes (4-inch recommended), 3/8-nap rollers, or sprayers all work, but brushing gives you the best control over penetration.

UV Protection at Elevation

Messmer’s uses specialized UV absorbers in their formulation. Montana’s elevation means more intense UV exposure than sea-level locations — your deck gets hammered by radiation that would be filtered out at lower altitudes. Users note durability is superior on vertical surfaces compared to horizontal surfaces, which tracks with UV exposure patterns. Vertical siding catches morning or evening sun. Horizontal decking bakes all day.

The manufacturer’s expected lifespan runs 1-2 years on decks and 2-4 years on siding and fences. That’s realistic for a penetrating stain in Montana conditions. Any stain claiming 5+ years on a horizontal surface is selling fantasy.

Bottom Line

Users praise the ease of application and natural matte finish. It’s considered a premium one-coat alternative to big-box brands like Cabot or Behr. The no-strip recoating saves massive labor costs over the life of a deck or fence. The product includes one gallon of Messmer’s UV+ Driftwood Gray stain — nothing else in the box.

The warranty is limited to replacement or refund of purchase price and doesn’t cover labor. Standard for the industry, but worth noting for contractors writing their own warranties.

FAQ

What wood types work with Messmer’s UV+? Compatible with cedar, pine, redwood, pressure-treated lumber (CCA, ACQ, Copper Azole), fir, oak, and Douglas fir. The penetrating formula handles both softwoods and hardwoods, though coverage varies by density.

How do you prep previously stained wood? Clean with Messmer’s Wood & Deck Cleaner (Part A) to remove dirt and graying, then brighten with Wood & Deck Brightener (Part B) to neutralize tannin stains on redwood and cedar. Allow wood to dry completely before application. Previous penetrating stains don’t need stripping — just cleaning and brightening.

Can you apply it with a sprayer? Yes — airless sprayers and air-assisted sprayers both work. Back-brushing helps ensure even penetration, especially on rough surfaces.

What about cleanup and disposal? Use mineral spirits or paint thinner for tools. Dispose of rags and rollers in a water-filled container to prevent spontaneous combustion. Oil-soaked rags are a real fire hazard — take it seriously.
