How to Choose the Right Filler, Patch, or Texturing Compound

Pick the wrong filler and it fails. Fast. Spackle stuffed into a flexing stucco crack pops right back out by the next freeze-thaw cycle. Wood putty smeared into a deep void shrinks and sinks. Before any brand matters, the choice comes down to three things: what material you’re patching, how big the damage is, and whether that spot is going to move.

That last point is the one most people miss. Choosing the right filler requires matching the product to the material, damage size, and movement requirements. Get those right and the patch holds. Get them wrong and you’re back at it next season.

Match the Filler to the Material and the Damage

Start with the substrate. Different surfaces want different chemistry.

Wood. For small nail holes in stain-grade work, a non-hardening putty fills the gap without fuss. For larger paint-grade holes, reach for a sandable wood filler that dries hard. ZAR Patch Wood Filler is a latex compound that fills nail holes and repairs cracks, gouges, broken corners, and chipped edges on wood surfaces. It only shrinks a little, and can be nailed, sawed, sanded, or drilled. The thing that sets a good wood filler apart for stained work is how it takes color. It accepts paint, varnish, shellac, polyurethanes, and stains — in fact, it accepts stain more readily than conventional wood patching compounds. That matters because it greatly diminishes the lighter “halo” effect surrounding the patch when the patch requires a wood stain. It comes in neutral, red oak, white, golden oak, and dark tone so you can get close to the wood you’re matching. One warning worth heeding: it’s not for use on exterior wooden decks or other exterior horizontal surfaces.

Drywall and plaster. Minor dings and small holes call for a lightweight spackle. DAP Patch ‘N Paint Lightweight Spackling patches and primes in one step and is ideal for repairing holes, cracks, and dents in drywall, plaster, wood, and stucco — low odor, for interior or exterior use. The selling point is speed: it dries fast with no need to sand or prime, letting you paint with latex paint in 30 minutes, and it won’t shrink or crack.

Stucco, masonry, brick. This is where movement becomes the deciding factor — more on that below. For minor stucco repair, DAP Phenopatch Pre-Mixed Stucco Patch repairs minor cracks in stucco, creates a hard, durable patch that blends evenly with the original stucco when painted, and is mildew and weather resistant for interior or exterior use.

Rigid vs. Flexible — The Crack That Keeps Coming Back

Here’s the heart of it. In Montana, exterior stucco and masonry live through brutal freeze-thaw cycling. Surfaces expand and contract. A rigid filler in a spot that moves will crack right back out — which is exactly why the rigid products say so on the label.

DAP Patch ‘N Paint, for all its speed, carries a clear limit: do not use on wear surfaces or where expansion and contraction occur, and do not use as a skim coat. The Phenopatch stucco patch says the same: do not use as a caulk, sealant or joint filler over cracks and joints where expansion and contraction may occur. Ignore that and you’ll be repatching.

For cracks that move, you want an elastomeric compound that stays flexible. DAP Elastopatch is a high-performance elastomeric spackling compound that eliminates reoccurring cracks by providing a permanently flexible fill — excellent on textured surfaces including stucco, masonry, brick, plaster, drywall, or any surface requiring a permanently flexible seal. The trade-off: superior paintability that won’t flash paint, but it’s NOT sandable. The textured version is a terpolymer patching compound for interior and exterior repairs that need to stand the test of time — mildew-resistant and waterproof above ground.

Titebond’s TitePatch line splits flexible duty by crack size. The Textured Brush Grade repairs, seals, and fills non-structural cracks and brushes over smaller, hairline cracks to seal textured substrates such as masonry or stucco. The Textured Knife Grade seals and fills larger cracks and holes in textured surfaces. Both are flexible and have excellent adhesion, flexibility, and are paintable in 30 minutes. Just know the boundaries: don’t use them on structural cracks or repairs, and the product is not sandable.

For the harshest exterior exposure, Richard’s Seal-Flex earns its keep on temperature swings. It’s an acrylic elastomeric patching compound for permanent repair of interior and exterior cementitious substrates such as stucco and masonry cracks, providing long-term durability, maximum resistance to wind-driven rain, mildew resistance, and it meets ASTM-D-746 for low-temperature flexibility. The numbers back the flex: a service temperature range of −30°F to 180°F and tensile strength/elongation at break of 250 PSI / 600% elongation. That elongation is what lets a patch ride out a Montana winter without splitting.

Coverage figures help you buy the right amount. Phenopatch runs about 12–18 sq ft per quart and 48–72 sq ft per gallon. TitePatch Brush Grade covers 25 square feet per gallon at a 1/16” wet film thickness, 6 square feet per quart. The Knife Grade is rated by linear feet of crack: 392 linear feet per gallon at 1/4” thickness, 98 linear feet per quart.

Installation and Finishing Basics

Prep makes or breaks the patch. Every one of these products wants the same starting point: the surface must be free of grease, oil, and other foreign matter. On the elastomerics, surfaces must be clean and free of any material that may prevent adequate adhesion, and you allow new concrete to cure for 30 days before application. Richard’s says the same — allow all new concrete/masonry surfaces to dry and cure approximately 30 days before application. Rush a patch onto green concrete and it won’t bond.

Build it up in the right number of passes. For spackle, one application is usually sufficient for small repairs; for repairs deeper than 1/8”, apply two or more layers, allowing it to dry between applications. Stucco patch works the same over depth: thin cracks may be repaired with one application, but for fills over 1/4” deep, apply two or more layers, letting each dry before the next. The layered approach for stucco is fill the first coat to just below the surface and let it dry, then apply a second coat and blend to match surrounding texture.

Overfill slightly and feather the edges. With wood filler, press the compound tightly into place, building the patch up slightly higher than the surrounding area. On elastomeric crack repair, feather the product down to the substrate about 2” on either side of the crack to blend and aid elongation. For larger moving cracks, the pro move is using bond breaker tape to prevent 3-sided adhesion — that lets the patch stretch instead of tearing.

Finish times vary by product and by paint type. DAP Patch ‘N Paint can be painted within 30 minutes with latex; if sanding is desired or oil-based paint is going on, allow it to dry thoroughly, approximately 24 hours. Phenopatch takes a bit longer — paintable in about 2 hours with latex; for oil-based paint, allow about 24 hours. The flexible compounds reach full strength slower: TitePatch hits full cure in 3–7 days, and Richard’s Seal-Flex runs tack dry in 4 hours for prime coat, with recoat at 24 hours or overnight for the finish coat. Wood filler sits between — allow the patch to dry overnight before applying an oil-based stain, and let it dry 1.5 to 2 hours before applying latex paint.

Temperature and Shelf-Life Limits Montana Builders Ignore at Their Peril

This is where the short season bites. Nearly every patch here shares one hard floor: 40°F. DAP Patch ‘N Paint says do not apply when temperatures are below 40°F. Titebond is more specific — air, patching compound, and surface temperature should all be above 40°F. Phenopatch raises the bar on stucco: apply in temperatures 40°F and above, and the surface temperature must be above 40°F for at least 24 hours. ZAR’s wood filler holds the same line — do not use when material and/or air temperature is below 40°F.

Watch the weather window on anything exterior. TitePatch says do not apply if rain is expected within 12 hours. Phenopatch widens that to do not use outside if rain or freezing temperatures are expected within 24 hours. In country where a sunny afternoon can turn to a hard frost overnight, that means watching the forecast, not just the thermometer.

A note on freeze-thaw stability, because it gets misread. Several of these are rated freeze/thaw stable — Phenopatch is stable for 5 cycles at 0°F, and DAP Patch ‘N Paint carries the same rating. But that’s storage stability — whether the product survives freezing in the can. It is not permission to apply below 40°F. Two different things.

Shelf life is worth tracking on a shop shelf. DAP spackle and stucco patch run a 12-month shelf life. Titebond TitePatch holds 24 months stored in a dry location at or below 75°F. Richard’s Seal-Flex lists a 2-year minimum shelf life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my exterior stucco crack keep reopening after I patch it? Almost always because a rigid filler went into a spot that moves. Rigid products are built for static damage and warn against it directly — do not use on wear surfaces or where expansion and contraction occur. For a crack that flexes with temperature swings, use an elastomeric compound. DAP Elastopatch eliminates reoccurring cracks by providing a permanently flexible fill, and Richard’s Seal-Flex is rated for a service range of −30°F to 180°F with 600% elongation — flex enough to ride out the cycle instead of splitting.

Can I sand an elastomeric patch smooth? No. That’s the trade-off for flexibility. DAP Elastopatch is not sandable, and TitePatch is not sandable either. They make up for it with paintability that won’t flash. If you need to sand the repair flush — say, paint-grade trim or drywall — use a sandable filler instead. A lightweight spackle takes paint without sanding, and wood filler can be nailed, sawed, sanded, or drilled.

What filler takes wood stain without leaving a light halo? Reach for a filler formulated to accept stain. ZAR Patch Wood Filler accepts stain more readily than conventional patching compounds and greatly diminishes the lighter “halo” effect around the patch when stained. It comes in neutral, red oak, white, golden oak, and dark tone to get you close on color before the stain even goes down.

How deep a hole can I fill in one pass? Not deep. Build it up in layers. For spackle, repairs deeper than 1/8” need two or more layers, drying between applications. For stucco, fills over 1/4” deep get two or more layers, each dried before the next. Wood filler the same — deep areas should be filled in layers, allowing each layer to dry, sanding after each has dried completely.

How long before I can paint over a patch? Depends on the product and the paint. Fast spackle and the elastomerics take latex in about 30 minutes; Patch ‘N Paint is latex-paintable in 30 minutes, but if you’re sanding or using oil-based paint, wait about 24 hours. Stucco patch wants about 2 hours with latex, roughly 24 hours for oil-based. Just remember that paintable doesn’t mean fully cured — the flexible compounds keep curing for 3 to 7 days.

It’s late October. Can I still patch an exterior crack? Only if you can hold temperature and dodge the weather. The floor is 40°F across the board — stucco patch needs the surface above 40°F for at least 24 hours, not just the air at the moment you trowel it on. And don’t apply outside if rain or freezing is expected within 24 hours. When the overnight lows start dipping below that line, exterior patching season is effectively over. Storage stability ratings don’t change that — freeze/thaw stable in the can is not the same as safe to apply in the cold.
