Black Label™ Professional Grade IPE+ Marine Oil

Black Label™ Professional Grade IPE+ Marine Oil is an oil-based penetrating wood finish designed for contractors working with expensive tropical hardwoods. This professional-grade marine oil formulation penetrates deeply into high-density hardwoods while protecting against moisture absorption and UV degradation. For Montana contractors dealing with Ipe, Garapa, Cumaru, Jatoba, Tigerwood, and other dense hardwoods, this finish addresses the unique challenges of protecting premium materials in extreme climate conditions.

The product delivers practical benefits that matter on job sites. It reduces surface checking and improves wood stability during acclimation — critical when expensive hardwood sits through Montana’s temperature swings. The oil preserves natural wood colors with specialized pigments while providing measurable UV protection. Most importantly for contractors, it causes no wood grain raising upon application, eliminating the need for additional sanding between coats.

Coverage and Application Specs

Coverage rates determine material costs and job scheduling. Black Label delivers two distinct coverage profiles depending on application method:

Application TypeCoverage RateBest Use
Standard (1 face, 2 edges)250 sq ft/gallonPost-installation maintenance
Comprehensive (2 faces, 2 edges)150 sq ft/gallonPre-installation coating

Pre-installation coating on all board faces is highly recommended. This comprehensive application protects wood during the critical acclimation period and prevents moisture-related callbacks. The extra material cost pays for itself in reduced warranty claims.

The 24-hour full cure time works well for Montana’s variable weather. At approximately 10 lbs per gallon, the product handles like standard penetrating oils. Application requires thin coats with a roller or brush. Any excess oil that hasn’t absorbed after 20-30 minutes must be wiped off to prevent puddling or a sticky surface.

VOC Compliance and Environmental Options

Black Label offers two VOC formulations to meet different project requirements:

FormulationVOC ContentCompliance
Low VOC≤250 g/LAll 50 states
Ultra-low VOC≤100 g/LSpecific regional compliance

Both formulations meet SCAQMD VOC compliance standards. The ultra-low option addresses stricter regional requirements without sacrificing penetration or protection. Montana contractors typically use the standard low-VOC formulation, but the ultra-low option provides flexibility for projects with specific environmental requirements.

Safety protocols matter. Rags and waste soaked in oil must be disposed of in a water-filled metal container due to spontaneous combustion risk. This isn’t theoretical — oil-soaked rags generate heat through oxidation and will ignite. Users should wear protective clothing and eyewear. Never mix cleaners or brighteners with ammonia or household cleaners.

Size Options and Distribution

Black Label packages the marine oil in three practical sizes:

  • 5 gallon pail
  • 1 gallon can
  • 1 quart can

The product typically sells through high-end B2B distributors including Dakota Hardwoods, Russin, Weekes, and West Wind Hardwood. This professional distribution channel reflects the product’s positioning — it’s not competing on homeowner shelves at box stores.

Limited public consumer reviews exist as it is a professional-grade niche product. The contractors who use it aren’t leaving Amazon reviews. They’re ordering through their regular hardwood suppliers and judging performance by callback rates and client satisfaction.

FAQ

Can this oil be applied over existing water-based finishes? No. Oil-based finishes CANNOT be applied over water-based finishes. However, water-based finishes can be applied over oil-based finishes. If the existing coating is water-based, it must be completely removed before applying Black Label marine oil.

What active ingredients provide the protection? The formulation includes UV inhibitors, fungicide, and pigmented tint. These components work together to protect against Montana’s high-altitude UV exposure and moisture cycles.

How should contractors prepare surfaces before application? Surface must be cleaned (pressure wash or brush/wash) and dried thoroughly before application. Always test finishes on a small area of the decking before full application to verify color and absorption.

What’s the actual manufacturer warranty? Manufacturer typically covers product defects as is standard for wood finishes; however, no specific longevity performance guarantee is explicitly stated for the oil’s lifespan. This is standard practice — wood finishes warranty the product quality, not years of protection.

Which hardwood applications work best? The oil excels on exterior hardwood decks, hardwood cladding and soffit, porch flooring, and for annual or semi-annual maintenance of existing hardwood surfaces. Pre-installation coating provides the most value by protecting all six board surfaces.
