Schlage Latitude: Grade 1 Security Meets Modern Design

The Schlage Latitude line delivers ANSI Grade 1 security — the highest residential rating — with modern lever aesthetics and professional-grade construction. The pick and drill-resistant cylinders and sleek modern interior lever set this apart from the decorative hardware that dominates the residential market.

Security That Earns the Grade 1 Rating

The F60-CAM-LAT model achieves its Grade 1 certification through concrete security features: 5-pin tumbler C-keyway, 1-inch hardened steel deadbolt throw, and pick/drill-resistant cylinders. That hardened steel core in the deadbolt matters when someone’s trying to kick in your door. Grade 1 versus the Grade 2 or Grade 3 ratings typical of residential locks means this handleset passed more abuse cycles and force testing.

All-metal construction throughout the mechanism. No plastic parts hiding behind the escutcheon plates. Thick door kits extend compatibility up to 2-1/4” doors — useful for those solid mahogany entries that exceed standard thickness.

The certification backing includes Residential Grade AAA — the highest rating for Security, Durability, and Finish. Triple-A means it passed the torture tests for operational cycles, finish adhesion, and forced entry resistance.

Installation Features That Actually Save Time

Snap & Stay technology holds the deadbolt in place during assembly, while the adjustable through-bolt slides up and down 1-1/2 inches to fit existing door holes. That sliding bolt eliminates re-drilling when replacing an old handleset with wonky hole placement. Worth its weight in gold on a retrofit.

The triple-option latch ships with square corner, round corner, and drive-in faceplates — covers every door prep you’ll encounter without a trip back to the store. These levers work perfectly for hallways or closets where locks aren’t necessary, and pair well with a deadbolt to secure an entrance or back door.

Adjustable components include the bottom through-bolt (slides 1.5 inches) and dual-backset latch. Required tools: Phillips screwdriver. That’s it. No specialized jigs or drill bits needed.

The Camelot/Latitude Design Strategy

This handleset pairs a sleek, modern Latitude interior lever with traditional Camelot exterior trim. Smart positioning for transitional homes where the exterior needs curb appeal but the interior demands clean lines. The combination targets luxury or transitional home designs combining traditional and modern elements.

Included in the box: Exterior Handleset Grip, Exterior Deadbolt Trim, Interior Latitude Lever, Interior Deadbolt Thumbturn, Two Keys (Schlage C-keyway), Universal Latch and Strike Plates, Mounting Screws and Hardware, Installation Instructions. Everything ships together — no separate SKUs to coordinate.

Schlage typically prices 10-20% higher than comparable Kwikset models. The premium buys you genuine Grade 1 security, all-metal construction, and installation features that work. While Kwikset focuses on convenience features like SmartKey re-keying, Schlage emphasizes physical security through pick and drill resistance.

For Montana’s extended response times — especially in rural areas — Grade 1 security provides real protection, not just the illusion of it. The all-metal construction handles -20°F to 90°F temperature swings without the plastic fatigue you see in composite locksets. Skip the Latitude if you just need privacy hardware for interior doors. This is entry-door security at entry-door pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the actual security difference between Grade 1 and Grade 2? Grade 1 (the Latitude’s rating) represents the highest ANSI/BHMA residential security certification, requiring the lock to withstand more operational cycles and force than Grade 2 or 3. Schlage handlesets are typically heavier and more robust than Grade 2/3 competitors like standard Kwikset models. The testing includes everything from cycle counts to sledgehammer impacts.

Will this fit existing door prep? The F60-CAM-LAT fits standard doors 1-5/8” to 1-3/4” thick with either 2-3/8” or 2-3/4” backset. The adjustable through-bolt slides 1-1/2” to accommodate existing holes that might be slightly off. It’s compatible with most standard residential door preparations and reversible for left or right-handed doors.

How does installation compare to other handlesets? Snap & Stay technology simplifies installation by holding the deadbolt in place during assembly. You only need a Phillips screwdriver, and the process includes adjusting the latch to backset, installing the latch and deadbolt, installing the exterior handleset using Snap & Stay, then the interior lever and thumbturn. The sliding through-bolt means less drilling on retrofits.

What makes the Latitude lever different from Schlage’s other interior levers? The Latitude features a sleek, modern lever design specifically intended to pair with traditional exterior trim like the Camelot. All-metal construction distinguishes it from plastic-component alternatives. While perfect for passages and hallways, the Grade 1 rating and security features position it for entry door use.
