OrePac Knotty Pine 82VA Raised Interior Door

The OrePac Knotty Pine 82VA delivers solid core construction with engineered floating panels that prevent cracking from humidity changes — the kind of engineering that matters when Montana temperatures swing 50 degrees in a day. Available in widths from 18” to 36”, this 2-panel arch top door with raised V-groove detailing fits both standard and non-standard openings common in older Montana homes.

The solid core provides superior sound reduction between rooms — practical for homes where the wood stove runs in the living room while bedrooms stay cooler. But here’s the catch: proper installation demands patience. The door requires 24-48 hours of acclimation before hanging, and all six sides must be sealed and finished for the warranty to hold.

Construction and Specifications

The 82VA uses real knotty pine veneers over a solid core, with engineered panels designed to “float” within the frame. This floating panel system addresses the expansion and contraction that destroys traditional solid wood doors in variable climates. OrePac allows up to 1/4 inch of warping on doors 3’x7’ or smaller — realistic tolerance for wood products in dry climates.

OrePac makes four variations of this basic design: the standard 82 (flat top, no V-grooves), 82V (flat top with V-grooves), 82A (arch top, no V-grooves), and this 82VA model that combines the arch top with V-groove panels. The arch adds visual interest without compromising the door’s structural integrity.

Installation and Finishing Requirements

Store the door flat on a level surface in the installation area for 24-48 hours before hanging. This acclimation period isn’t optional in Montana’s dry climate — skip it and watch the door twist itself out of square within weeks. When trimming to fit, use a fine-tooth saw and avoid excessive cutting that could compromise the door’s structure.

Install three hinges on standard 80-inch doors to prevent sagging. Two hinges won’t cut it with solid core weight. For finishing, start with 180-220 grit sandpaper, then apply quality primer and two coats of paint or stain followed by three coats of clear topcoat. All six sides — including top, bottom, and all edges — must be sealed. Miss the bottom edge and moisture wicks up from below, voiding the warranty.

The slab-only configuration includes just the door and requires separate purchase of hinges, jambs, and hardware. Pre-hung units come complete with matching pine jambs, door stops, three hinges, and lock bore preparation. Hardware compatibility is standard — works with residential hinges and locksets, typically pre-bored for 2-3/8 inch or 2-3/4 inch backset.

When It Makes Sense

OrePac positions itself as a premium door supplier with nearly 50 years in the business. Their 82VA makes sense for quality-conscious builds where interior door performance matters. The solid core construction beats hollow core alternatives for sound reduction, and the engineered floating panels solve the humidity problem that plagues solid wood doors.

The 5-year limited warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship for climate-controlled interior settings, but only if you follow their finishing requirements to the letter.

Not the cheapest interior door option. But for homes where temperature and humidity vary between rooms, where sound transmission matters, or where non-standard door widths need quality solutions, the 82VA’s engineering earns its place.

FAQ

How long should I let the door acclimate before installation? Allow 24-48 hours of acclimation in the installation area before hanging. Store the door flat on a level surface during this period. Montana’s dry climate makes this step critical for preventing warping and twisting after installation.

What finishing is required for warranty coverage? All six sides of the door must be sealed and finished — top, bottom, and all four edges. Apply primer and two coats of paint or stain, followed by three coats of clear topcoat. Skip any surface and you void the warranty. The bottom edge is most commonly missed but arguably most important for moisture protection.

Can these doors handle non-standard openings? Yes — the 82VA comes in six widths from 18” to 36” at the standard 80” height. Doors can be trimmed to fit, but use a fine-tooth saw and avoid excessive cutting that compromises the door’s structural integrity. The variety of widths makes these practical for older homes with odd-sized openings.

What’s the difference between the 82VA and other OrePac models? The 82VA combines an arch top with V-groove raised panels. The standard 82 has a flat top with no V-grooves, the 82V adds V-grooves to a flat-top design, and the 82A features an arch top without V-grooves. All share the same solid core construction and floating panel technology.
