OrePac Flush Doors - Birch Smooth 6/8

OrePac’s flush doors deliver what Montana contractors need: a smooth birch veneer surface that takes any finish, available in both budget-friendly hollow core and sound-blocking solid core options. The doors come in standard 30” x 80” dimensions with smooth birch veneer over either solid or hollow core construction. At 25-30 pounds for hollow core versus 70-100 pounds for solid core, the weight difference alone tells you which option handles sound better.

Core Type Makes or Breaks Performance

Solid core doors run 1-3/4” thick and weigh 70-100 pounds, while hollow core versions measure 1-3/8” thick at just 25-30 pounds. That weight translates directly to performance. Solid core blocks sound between rooms — critical for bedrooms next to living spaces or home offices. The hollow core option works fine for closets and pantries where sound control doesn’t matter.

Fire-rated options are available with a 20-minute rating. Not every interior door needs fire rating, but having the option matters for furnace rooms, attached garages, or multi-family projects where code requires it.

The math on solid versus hollow core comes down to location. Bedrooms, bathrooms, and home offices justify the solid core premium. Closets and utility spaces don’t.

Installation Details That Protect Your Warranty

OrePac requires all six sides finished and sealed for warranty coverage — that’s faces, edges, top, and bottom. Skip the bottom edge and moisture wicks up into the core, voiding your warranty. The 5-year interior warranty only applies with proper finishing.

Three hinges work for doors up to 7 feet tall. Taller doors need four hinges to prevent sagging. OrePac specifically calls for acclimation on-site before installation — critical in Montana where job site humidity rarely matches the warehouse.

Storage matters: keep doors flat on a level surface above ground, never stack them on end. Standing doors on edge warps them, especially during Montana’s temperature swings.

Birch Veneer Takes Any Finish

The smooth birch veneer surface gives you a blank canvas for staining or painting. This unfinished surface allows customization to match specific design preferences. Unlike molded doors with fake grain patterns, smooth birch shows real wood character when stained.

Proper prep requires sanding and cleaning with a tack cloth before finishing, then applying two coats minimum of paint, stain, or sealer to all surfaces. Stained doors need three coats of clear topcoat. Finish doors while lying flat — vertical finishing causes runs and drips.

The doors meet CARB compliance standards, which matters for indoor air quality. Some imported doors still use formaldehyde-heavy adhesives that off-gas for years.

FAQ

What’s the actual difference between hollow and solid core for sound? Solid core doors weigh 70-100 pounds versus 25-30 pounds for hollow core. That mass blocks sound transmission between rooms. Hollow core doors provide minimal sound control — fine for closets, inadequate for bedrooms.

Do these doors come pre-hung or just as slabs? Standard package includes the door slab unfinished, with hardware, frames, and pre-hang services sold separately. The doors work with standard wood jambs or pocket door frames.

What happens if I don’t finish all six sides? The warranty requires all six sides properly finished and sealed — faces, edges, top, and bottom. Skip any surface and moisture penetration voids the warranty. Interior doors carry a 5-year limited warranty when properly finished.

Can these doors handle Montana’s dry winters? OrePac specifically requires on-site acclimation before installation. This lets the door adjust to local humidity levels before hanging. Proper finishing with two coats minimum on all surfaces prevents moisture-related warping.
