Northwest Factory Finishes ColoRISE Factory Finished 5/4 Trim

ColoRISE Factory Finished 5/4 Trim delivers the only hard siding trim product allowing incidental ground contact — a critical advantage for Montana contractors dealing with snow buildup and moisture exposure at foundation lines. The synthetic fiber composite core contains 94% recycled content and handles freeze-thaw cycling better than traditional wood or engineered alternatives.

The product addresses the biggest trim installation headaches: warping from moisture, cracking from temperature swings, and the endless cycle of repainting. PPG Duracolor machine-applied coating eliminates on-site finishing while ICC-ES Report ESR-4112 certification backs up the ground contact claims with third-party validation.

Core Specifications and Installation

Available in 4”, 6”, and 8” widths, all boards come in 13 feet 4 inches (160 inches) length with 5/4” thickness. That’s actual 1.25-inch thickness — substantial enough to hold fasteners securely without splitting.

Installation uses standard woodworking tools — no specialty blades, no dust masks, no silica concerns. Carbide-tipped blades cut against the exterior face. Fastening requires 8d hot-dip galvanized nails or 7d screws with minimum 1-1/4 inch penetration into framing.

Spacing follows temperature-based guidelines: 3/16 inch gaps at butt joints when installing at 60°F or below, 1/8 inch gaps above 60°F. Seal joints with ASTM C920 Class 50 sealant or prime/paint cut ends.

Ground clearance matters despite the approval. Maintain minimum 4 inches above grade and 1/2 inch above finished surfaces like decks or concrete. The ground contact rating covers incidental exposure, not burial.

Material Performance vs Alternatives

The synthetic core changes the maintenance equation. Compressed synthetic fiber composite (RISE®) uses recycled polyester, nylon, and fiberglass from carpet — materials that don’t absorb water like wood fibers do.

Compared to fiber cement, ColoRISE cuts easier without silica dust, weighs less, and allows ground contact. Against engineered wood trim, the synthetic core eliminates water absorption while providing that ground contact approval no wood product can match.

Some contractors note pre-finished trim requires careful handling to avoid damage during installation. Fair point. But the trade-off is consistency — every board arrives with the same finish quality, no brush marks, no thin spots, no color variation between batches.

Montana-Specific Applications

Northwest Factory Finishes operates from their 140,000 sq. ft. facility in Bonner, Montana — they understand freeze-thaw reality. The freeze-thaw resistant core matters when trim faces -20°F nights and 40°F chinook afternoons in the same week.

Applications include fascia and gable rake, soffit (vented or unvented), board and batten, and window/door surrounds. The ground contact approval opens up uses other trim can’t handle — skirting on elevated decks, transition boards at grade, anywhere snow accumulation creates persistent moisture.

Frequently Asked Questions

What fastener pattern does 8-inch ColoRISE trim require? Eight-inch widths need 3 fasteners per stud, while 4-inch and 6-inch widths use 2 fasteners per stud. Space fasteners 16 inches on-center into studs or 12 inches on-center into 3/4” sheathing.

Can ColoRISE trim sit directly on the ground? No. Despite ground contact approval, maintain minimum 4-inch clearance above grade. The approval covers incidental contact from snow or splash-back, not direct burial or constant soil contact.

How does the recycled content affect durability? The 94% recycled synthetic fiber core (from carpet materials) provides freeze-thaw resistance and eliminates rot/decay issues. Recycled synthetic performs better than virgin wood fiber in moisture resistance.

What maintenance does the factory finish require? The PPG Duracolor coating carries a 15-year limited warranty. Touch-up paint from the pre-finisher handles any field cuts or fastener holes. No regular repainting schedule required during the warranty period.
