How to Pick the Right Space-Saving Door
Doors & MillworkThree doors. One problem. All of them exist to reclaim the floor space a swinging door wastes. The right pick comes down to three things: how much room sits in front of the opening, whether the wall can be opened up, and how heavy the slab is.
Here’s the short version. A pocket door slides into a hidden wall cavity and disappears completely. A bifold folds against itself on an overhead track. A bipass slides one panel past another. Each solves the swing-radius problem differently, and each carries a trade-off you live with every day after install.
A pocket door slides into a cavity framed within the wall. Fully open, it leaves no trace — only an unobstructed opening and continuous wall surface. That’s the appeal. Because pocket doors retract into the wall, they require zero floor clearance. Fixtures can abut the door jamb — a towel bar where a swinging door would strike, a toilet inches from the frame. Floor area typically sacrificed to door swing becomes fully usable. For a tight bathroom or a hallway where every inch counts, nothing beats it.
The catch is in the wall. Building that pocket requires structural modification — a hollow wall pocket must be built, typically during new construction or major renovations. They require careful framing coordination, and they’re ideal in space-critical locations where doors would otherwise obstruct furniture placement or circulation paths. The veteran’s warning: framing a cavity can be prohibitive in load-bearing walls or spaces with existing plumbing and electrical runs. Reserve pocket doors for interior partitions. Don’t bury one in an exterior wall full of insulation or a wet wall full of supply lines.
Bifolds work the opposite way. Bifold doors use hinged panels that fold against each other along an overhead track. Open, they stack neatly against the door frame, creating a wide passage without disappearing. The win for remodelers: installation needs no wall modification — they mount directly into standard openings, ideal for retrofits. For openings where full access is needed but swing clearance is limited, bifolds offer a practical middle ground. They’re compact, affordable, and easy to install — making them a go-to in value-engineered projects. A bifold allows up to 90% access to the closet interior and takes up half the swing arc of a traditional door. The trade-off is honest: stacked panels remain visible.
Bipass doors hold the smallest footprint of the three. For openings where there’s minimal room in front of the closet door opening, a bipass door is best. It allows for a closet door even if you’ve only got 6 inches in front of the opening to work with. The compromise: accessibility is only available on half of the closet at a time. Use it where a swing door or furniture blocks the opening and there’s genuinely no room for anything else. When working with blueprints, bifolds are often priced out surrounding bipass doors for openings where that makes sense.
A quick decision rule. When architectural continuity is paramount, pocket doors prevail — they vanish completely into the wall when open, leaving no visual trace. For transitions like kitchen to home office or hallway to living room, pocket doors provide privacy on demand while allowing unobstructed flow when open. But bifold doors install into standard frames with minimal modification, suitable for renovations where wall work isn’t feasible. For older Montana homes, that retrofit-friendliness keeps you from tearing into an insulated exterior wall or a plumbing wall just to hide a door.
Hardware failure is the number one reason these doors quit working. Match the track rating to the slab weight or pay for it later.
Slab material drives weight and performance. Hollow core works for low-budget, light-duty openings. Solid wood, solid-core composite, or WPC earns its keep where durability and sound dampening matter — and that’s most of the time in a home with real foot traffic. WPC is waterproof and termite-resistant, which makes it worth a look for bathrooms and laundry rooms. In Montana, where condensation collects in those rooms through a long heating season, moisture resistance isn’t a luxury — it’s the difference between a door that lasts and one that swells.
That moisture point cuts against bifolds in one specific spot. Bifold doors are rarely optimal for main bathroom entrances. Panel joints compromise moisture and sound sealing compared to solid-core alternatives. They do excel in auxiliary roles, though — separating a water closet, enclosing a deep linen cabinet, or sectioning a laundry alcove.
Now the hardware. Standard kits hold up to roughly 75 pounds. Heavy-duty systems run up to about 175 pounds. For the heaviest commercial work, frame kits go further — the Johnson 1562 Series carries 200 lbs max weight per door, in 18-inch, 24-inch, 30-inch, and 36-inch door widths, with a ball-bearing wheel hanger rated to that 200-pound max running on 6063T6 extruded aluminum box track.

WBC carries pre-fab pocket frames sized for common openings — 2-4, 2-6, 2-8, and 3-0 door widths — so the framing member matches the slab you’re hanging without cutting a custom cavity from scratch.
With pocket and bipass hardware buried in the wall, install quality matters more than it does on a hinged door. A mistake here means opening drywall to fix it.
The fundamentals: keep headers level and side jambs plumb, and allow 3/16-inch clearance to prevent binding. Coordinate trades early so plumbing and electrical stay out of the pocket cavity — that conversation happens at framing, not after the rock goes up. And lean toward tracks built from aluminum with ball-bearing or nylon rollers that let you service the door without opening the wall.
Know what’s in the box and what isn’t. Frame kits arrive single-packed, knocked down, ready for installation into 2x6 framed wall openings. They contain hardware for one bypass pocket door installation — door, jambs, drywall, door locks, and door pulls are not included. The 1562 needs a 5-1/2-inch (2x6) minimum wall structure thickness. Soft-close isn’t standard either — soft-close door operation requires the purchase of optional kits. Budget for the pulls, locks, and the door itself as separate line items.
One flexibility note worth knowing: frames can be cut down to accommodate smaller doors, so a single frame kit covers a range of opening sizes.
Which door saves the most space? The pocket door. It retracts fully into the wall and requires zero floor clearance, so fixtures and furniture can sit right against the jamb. The bipass is the runner-up for tight spots — it functions with as little as 6 inches of clearance in front of the opening, though you only reach half the opening at a time.

Why does slab weight matter so much? The track has to carry it. Standard kits handle up to about 75 pounds, heavy-duty systems up to about 175, and commercial bypass frames up to 200 pounds per door. Hang a solid-core slab on light-duty hardware and the rollers fail early. Spec the track to the slab, not the other way around.
Are bifolds a bad choice for bathrooms? For the main bathroom entrance, usually yes — the panel joints don’t seal moisture or sound as well as a solid-core door. But bifolds are a solid pick for secondary roles like a water closet, a linen cabinet, or a laundry alcove. For a wet room where moisture collects, a waterproof WPC slab on another door type seals better.
What’s not included in a pocket-door frame kit? Typically the door slab, jambs, drywall, locks, and pulls. The kit gives you the frame and the hanging hardware. Soft-close operation is usually a separate add-on kit. Plan those as extra line items so the project doesn’t stall waiting on parts.
