A 3-0 door is the trade term for a standard 36-inch-wide exterior door. The numbers read in feet and inches: the first is width, the second is height. So a 3-0 6-8 measures 36 inches wide by 80 inches tall — the most common residential entry size in the country. Most doors are available in an extensive variety of sizes, including industry-standard widths of 3’0” and 3’6” and heights of 6’8” and 8’0”.

The biggest decision isn’t the size. It’s the slab material and whether you buy prehung or slab-only. Get those two right and the rest is configuration. In a Montana entry — where you’ve got 70°F inside and -20°F on the other side of the slab come January — air infiltration around the door matters more than almost anything else. Performance first. Looks second.

Here’s how the sizing math works in practice. A door labeled as a nominal size runs slightly smaller in the actual slab. A door sold as a nominal 34” x 80” size, also commonly written as 2/10 x 6/8, has an actual slab size of 33-3/4” wide x 79” tall, with a standard exterior door thickness of 1-3/4”. Material: Fiberglass, Steel, or Wood

Three materials cover almost every residential entry. Each one trades off cost, upkeep, and how it handles a hard Montana winter.

Fiberglass is the workhorse. The fiberglass skins resist warping, rotting, denting, and rusting, and a high-density insulated foam core contributes to energy efficiency and overall rigidity. One caution worth knowing: fiberglass can crack under high-impact force in extreme cold. That’s relevant here when you’re weighing it against steel. Steel is the budget pick. It holds about half the market, brings strong security and energy efficiency, but it’s prone to dents and will rust if the skin gets scratched and left bare. For a high-traffic entry that takes abuse, that’s a real consideration.

Wood is the high-end, fully customizable option. It’s also the most expensive and the most demanding. Prehung vs. Slab, and How Doors Get Prepped

This is the install decision. Prehung comes as a complete unit — slab already hung in the frame with hinges. Best for new construction or any opening where the existing frame is damaged. Slab-only is the panel alone, for dropping into an existing frame that’s still square and solid.

How the slab is machined matters just as much. Door prep refers to how the door slab is machined for hinges and lock hardware. There are three options: without prep (blank), with no machining and ready for field preparation; standard prep, machined to common residential hinge and lock placements; and custom prep, with hinge and lock locations machined to exactly match your existing door. Replacing a slab in an old frame? If your existing door is prepped to specifications other than the standard layout, select custom prep so the new slab matches your existing door.

Standard prep follows predictable measurements. Standard tubular lock prep is machined for a 2-3/8” backset lockset and includes two 2-1/8” bore holes spaced 5-1/2” apart, with each bore centered 2-3/8” from the edge of the door. The handing flexibility is the nice part on a slab order — for slab-only orders, standard hinge prep is reversible. The mortises are machined completely through the edge of the door so hinges can be mounted from either direction, allowing left-hand or right-hand swing installation without additional routing.

One more replacement tip worth its weight: a 79” slab is the most common exterior slab height and is often the preferred choice even when the existing door measures 79-1/8” or 79-1/4” tall. In many replacement situations, a small height difference at the bottom can be addressed using an adjustable U-style door sweep, helping maintain proper sealing and smooth door operation within the existing frame.

Panel Style, Glass, and Handing

The traditional 3-0 is a solid panel door — no glass — and it earns that for a reason. Doors without glass provide maximum privacy and enhanced security, making solid-panel design a dependable choice for front entrances, side doors, and utility applications where visibility control and durability are priorities. A common config is the 3-panel 3/4, with a tall upper panel paired with two smaller lower panels, creating a balanced vertical layout. Want light without losing the lower panels? The tall upper panel can be cut out to accept a 3/4 lite glass insert, adding natural light while preserving the two lower panels and traditional proportions.

Glass adds light but costs you insulation. If you want a lite, look for double or triple-pane glass with low-E coatings to claw back some of that performance.

Handing must be specified when you order. Handing options include one-panel LH and RH; two-panel combinations; and three-panel configurations with sidelights such as SL/LH/SL and SL/RH/SL. Sidelights and transoms expand the opening when you want more light flanking the door.

The 4-9/16” jamb suits a standard 2x4 wall; the 6-9/16” matches a 2x6 wall, which is common in newer, better-insulated construction.

Energy Efficiency and Weather Sealing

Here’s the part most people get backward. More heat escapes through air leaks around the door than through the slab itself. A high R-value slab won’t save you if the perimeter leaks. Sealing matters as much as the door’s insulation rating.

Look for ENERGY STAR-qualified models — they come with tighter frames and better weatherstripping. The threshold is where doors live or die in this climate. An adjustable threshold keeps the door weather-tight as a house settles, and that settling is real over a few Montana winters. The newer doors handle it well: a composite adjustable inswing sill is standard on quality fiberglass units. When it comes to the weatherstrip itself, silicone or rubber outperforms foam and lasts longer through freeze-thaw cycling.
