Trex Transcend Lineage Decking

Trex Transcend Lineage brings SunComfort™ Technology to composite decking — the boards stay up to 35°F cooler than traditional composites. That’s the headline. For poolside decking where bare feet matter, or high-sun exposure areas where surface temperature becomes unbearable by afternoon, this heat-mitigating technology changes the conversation.

Lineage sits at the top of the Trex portfolio, positioned as the premium/luxury offering above Trex Select and Trex Enhance. The aesthetic backs up that positioning — more modern and refined than standard Trex Transcend, with subtle grain patterns instead of deep woodgrain textures. You’re paying for both performance and looks.

Technical Specifications and Installation

The boards come in three profiles, each engineered for specific applications:

ProfileActual DimensionsAvailable LengthsApplication
Standard Square Edge.94 in x 5.5 in (24 mm x 140 mm)12 ft, 16 ft, 20 ftStairs and edging
Standard Grooved Edge.94 in x 5.5 in (24 mm x 140 mm)12 ft, 16 ft, 20 ftDeck surface with hidden fasteners
Narrow Square Edge.94 in x 3.5 in (24 mm x 89 mm)16 ftPicture framing, accent borders

The boards handle 100 lbf/sq.ft. uniform load — standard for residential decks but worth confirming for hot tub installations. Joist spacing requirements: 16 inches on-center for residential, 12 inches for commercial or diagonal installation. Montana contractors already frame at 16 inches, so no adjustment needed for standard deck layouts.

Fastening depends on your edge profile. Grooved boards use Trex HideAway® Universal Hidden Fasteners. Square-edge boards need composite deck screws like TrapEase 3 or CAP-TOR Xd. Don’t cheap out on fasteners — the wrong screws will mushroom the composite or work loose over freeze-thaw cycles.

Fire Resistance for Montana’s WUI Zones

Lineage has IWUIC Ignition-Resistant certification and WUI compliance. With 37% of Flathead County homes in the wildland-urban interface and Lincoln County posting the highest wildfire risk acreage in Montana, fire-resistant decking isn’t optional anymore. Insurance companies are starting to care about these certifications.

The surface finish features high-performance shell protection on three sides. That proprietary shell resists fading, staining, scratching, and mold — the four horsemen of deck deterioration in Montana’s UV-intense, moisture-cycling climate. The 50-year limited residential warranty covers structural failure, fading, and staining. Commercial warranty drops to 10-25 years depending on application.

Color Options and Compatibility

Seven colors: Biscayne, Carmel, Hatteras, Jasper, Rainier, Island Mist, and Salt Flat. The palette leans contemporary — grays and earth tones that complement modern mountain architecture. No redwood mimics or golden cedar tones here.

The system integrates with Trex’s full ecosystem: Signature® Railing, Transcend Railing, Select Railing, plus matching fascia boards and stair risers in Lineage colors. Smart move building a complete deck system from one manufacturer — color consistency matters more than people think until they see mismatched grays side by side.

The Reality Check

SunComfort™ Technology delivers on its promise — boards genuinely stay cooler. At 2.4 lbs per linear foot, the boards handle easier than old-school composites. Made from 95% recycled materials if that matters to your clients.

The downsides? Premium positioning means premium pricing. You’re buying the Cadillac of composite decking. The refined grain pattern looks sophisticated but lacks the rustic character some Montana homeowners want. And while it only needs soap and water cleaning, spring pollen still requires annual power washing like every other composite.

For south-facing decks, poolside applications, or anywhere surface temperature drives complaints, Lineage earns its price. The heat mitigation alone justifies the upgrade from standard composites. Just make sure clients understand they’re paying for genuine performance advantages, not just a fancy name.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the SunComfort™ Technology actually work, or is it marketing? Independent testing shows the boards stay up to 35°F cooler than traditional composites. That’s measurable, not marketing. The technology reflects solar radiation instead of absorbing it. On a 90°F summer day, the difference between a 125°F and 160°F deck surface is the difference between uncomfortable and unusable.

How does Lineage compare to standard Trex Transcend? Lineage features more refined aesthetics with subtle grain patterns versus Transcend’s deeper woodgrain texture. The real differentiator is the SunComfort™ cooling technology — standard Transcend doesn’t have it. Lineage is positioned as the premium option above both Select and Enhance lines.

What’s the actual installation difference from wood decking? Main differences: 16-inch joist spacing stays the same for residential, but use 12 inches for commercial or diagonal layouts. Grooved boards need hidden fasteners, square-edge boards use specialized composite screws. Temperature-based gapping ranges from 1/8 to 1/4 inch — follow Trex’s temperature chart, not your gut.

Is the IWUIC certification worth the premium in Montana? Yes, if you’re building in WUI zones — which covers most of western Montana. Insurance companies increasingly require or discount for ignition-resistant materials. Some local jurisdictions already mandate IWUIC compliance for new construction in high-risk areas.

How does the warranty actually work? Residential gets 50 years covering structural failure, fading, and staining. Commercial drops to 10-25 years depending on use. Like all composite warranties, it’s prorated and requires proof of proper installation. Document your joist spacing and fastener selection.
