Trex Select Steel Mesh Railing

A high-performance railing system featuring a durable galvanized steel mesh infill, designed for a modern, industrial, or farmhouse aesthetic with low maintenance requirements. That’s the technical description. But if you’re a contractor dealing with Montana’s weather swings and clients who want something different than traditional balusters, this carbon steel mesh system delivers both durability and the modern farmhouse look that’s selling right now.

Heavy-Duty Steel Construction That Actually Lasts

The mesh isn’t some flimsy hardware store screening. 6-gauge wire formed into a 4” x 4” grid creates substantial infill panels that won’t bow or rattle. Zinc and powder coatings protect against corrosion and rusting. That double protection matters when you’re dealing with Montana’s freeze-thaw cycles and humidity swings.

Charcoal Black is your only color option with Select. No custom colors, no special orders. For contractors, that simplicity speeds up ordering and eliminates color-matching headaches between batches.

The Panels can be bent to follow the curves of a deck layout. That flexibility solves real jobsite problems when dealing with radius corners or non-standard angles. Try doing that with traditional balusters.

Installation Details and Code Compliance

Easy difficulty rating sounds optimistic until you realize the system uses pre-drilled openings for mesh insertion. No measuring and drilling hundreds of baluster holes. Compatible with all Trex decking systems (composite, PVC, aluminum, wood).

Meets code when used with an 8-ft aluminum T-rail stiffener for 8-ft spans. That IRC compliance requirement is non-negotiable on 8-foot sections. Budget for the T-rail stiffener on longer runs or the inspector will fail it.

Post compatibility gives you options: Works with 2.5” x 2.5” aluminum posts or 4” x 4” / 6” x 6” composite post sleeves. The aluminum posts work fine for modern designs. Composite sleeves over wood posts hide the pressure-treated lumber for cleaner aesthetics.

Select vs Signature: Know What You’re Selling

Select is the more budget-friendly option using carbon steel with a 25-year warranty. Signature is the premium line featuring 316-grade stainless steel (superior corrosion resistance in coastal environments) and a 50-year warranty.

The real difference? Signature offers more color options (Bronze, Black) while Select is primarily Charcoal Black. For Montana applications where salt spray isn’t a concern, paying double for stainless steel makes zero sense. Save the Signature recommendation for lakefront properties where every penny of corrosion resistance might matter.

Requires periodic care to delay rust on carbon steel (unlike stainless alternatives). Be honest with clients about this. The powder coating handles Montana weather fine, but damaged areas need touch-up to prevent rust bleeding.

Warranty Coverage That Matters

25-Year Limited Residential Warranty covering material defects and corrosion. 10-Year Limited Commercial Warranty. The warranty Protects against rotting, warping, splitting, and corrosion under normal use.

Twenty-five years on carbon steel in Montana conditions is solid coverage. The powder coating technology has improved dramatically over the past decade. This isn’t the stuff that flaked off after three winters back in the ‘90s.

FAQ

Q: Can I use regular metal snips to cut the mesh panels? A: Yes. The installation requires Metal cutting snips (for trimming mesh) as part of the standard tool list. The 6-gauge wire cuts cleanly with quality aviation snips.

Q: Does this work with Trex lighting systems? A: Compatible with Trex lighting, ‘Cocktail Rail’ options, and aluminum gates. The mesh design doesn’t interfere with post-mounted or under-rail lighting installations.

Q: What’s actually included with the railing kits? A: Top rail and Bottom rail, Carbon-steel mesh panel (often sold separately or as part of specific kits), Adjustable foot block(s), Hardware pack (brackets, fasteners, screws). Note: Post sleeves, caps, and skirts are typically sold separately or in all-in-one post kits.

Q: Is this the same as Trex Enhance Steel Railing? A: No. Select uses heavier 6-gauge galvanized and powder-coated carbon steel mesh. Enhance is an entry-level steel baluster system, not a mesh product. Different product lines entirely.

Q: Does the 25-year warranty cover rust? A: The warranty Protects against rotting, warping, splitting, and corrosion under normal use. Rust from damaged powder coating would fall under corrosion coverage, but document any shipping damage before installation.
