TimberTech Prime+ Collection: Entry-Level Composite That Doesn't Act Like It

TimberTech Prime+ delivers what budget-conscious contractors need: 85% recycled content, 25-year warranty, and legitimate moisture resistance at entry-level pricing. The scalloped profile engineering cuts weight and cost without compromising strength — a smart trade-off that makes sense for elevated decks and long carries.

The Scalloped Profile Advantage

The engineering tells the story. 5.36” x 0.94” actual dimensions with an engineered scalloped (grooved bottom) profile means lighter weight than solid profile boards. That matters when crews haul boards up to second-story decks or across job sites.

The trade-off? Not compatible with Cortex hidden fasteners. The scalloped design works with TOPLoc (color-matched face-fastening screws) and EdgeLoc (hidden fastener system for grooved boards) instead. Not a dealbreaker for contractors who understand fastener systems.

3-Sided Capping Reality

Here’s where TimberTech made the cost-cutting decision: polymer cap on 3 sides (protective against moisture, rot, and UV). The bottom is exposed to moisture unlike their PRO collection’s 4-sided cap.

This matters in Montana. Spring snowmelt keeps deck framing wet for weeks. A 3-sided cap protects where it counts — the walking surface and visible edges — but that exposed bottom means proper ventilation becomes critical. Prime+ gets a 25-year warranty versus PRO’s 30-year. Five years difference for significantly lower cost? Most contractors call that fair.

Installation Requirements That Matter

Montana’s temperature swings demand attention to detail. Maximum 16” on-center joist spacing for residential applications; 12” for diagonal or heavy-use. Don’t push these limits when snow load enters the equation.

Gapping requirements change with temperature: typically 1/8” to 3/16” depending on temperature at the time of installation. Install on a 30-degree March morning versus an 85-degree July afternoon? Different gap. Temperature-based installation charts aren’t suggestions in climates with 100+ degree annual temperature ranges.

Who Should Buy Prime+

Prime+ makes sense for contractors building quality decks on realistic budgets. The entry-level ‘Enhanced’ line from Trex gets compared unfavorably to Prime+‘s more realistic wood grain and higher build quality. Customers appreciate the blend of colors which prevents the ‘plastic’ look common in entry-level composites.

Natural wood-grain texture and advanced color blending deliver aesthetics that don’t scream “budget composite.” Add resistance to fading, staining, mold, mildew, and rot with no sanding, staining, or sealing required — you’ve got a deck that performs.

The lightweight scalloped design particularly shines on elevated decks where every pound matters during installation. For Montana’s short building season, faster installation translates directly to more jobs completed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can TimberTech Prime+ be used for stairs? Yes. Specifically allowed for use as stair treads according to manufacturer specifications.

What maintenance does Prime+ require? Periodic scrub and rinse with mild soap and water. No staining, sealing, or specialized treatments needed.

How does Prime+ compare to TimberTech’s premium lines? Prime+ offers more advanced color blending and realistic grain than the base Prime collection. Prime+ (EDGE) is 3-sided capped with a 25-year warranty; PRO is 4-sided capped with a 30-year warranty. AZEK is 100% PVC (no wood fibers) with a 50-year warranty, whereas Prime+ is a composite blend.

What colors does Prime+ offer? Available in Coconut Husk (natural brown), Sea Salt Gray (weathered gray), and Dark Cocoa (deep, rich brown).

Does the exposed bottom affect warranty coverage? The 25-Year Limited Lifetime Warranty and 25-Year Fade & Stain Limited Warranty remain in effect despite the 3-sided capping design.
