The Flat-Top Rail That Changes Deck Entertaining

TimberTech’s Drink Rail Top Rail offers contractors a unique functional upgrade—a flat surface for drinks and plates that integrates seamlessly with full-profile TimberTech deck boards. Compatible only with full-profile, square-shoulder deck boards (PRO, AZEK). Incompatible with scalloped boards like Terrain, Prime, or Prime+.

The powder-coated aluminum construction solves the rot problems that plague wood drink rails in Montana’s freeze-thaw climate. High-performance powder-coated aluminum means no annual staining, no cracking from moisture cycles, no warping from temperature swings.

Available in Black, White, and Dark Bronze finishes to match existing TimberTech systems. Rail height options include 36 in and 42 in, with the 42-inch option meeting commercial code requirements for Montana restaurants and bars.

Installation Requirements and Compatibility

Getting the drink rail right starts with understanding what it won’t work with. Not compatible with glass infill or open mid rail infill. Incompatible with scalloped boards like Terrain, Prime, or Prime+. Only full-profile, square-shoulder deck boards create the flush top surface.

Requires Drink Rail Clips spaced every 18 inches for proper support. For Over-the-Post configuration, wood block inserts are required — not included in the kit.

Installation Tools

Required tools include miter saw with carbide-tipped non-ferrous blade, cordless drill, #2 Square-drive bit, #2 Phillips-head bit, tape measure, and level. The carbide-tipped blade matters — standard wood blades gum up on aluminum.

Weather Performance and Known Issues

25-year limited warranty covering corrosion and fading backs up the durability claims. Powder-coated aluminum resists moisture—no rotting or cracking, critical for Montana’s 100-degree temperature swings.

But temperature changes create a real issue. Butt joints on deck boards may open/separate due to temperature changes — exactly what happens in Montana’s extreme thermal cycling. Plan for expansion gaps and consider using longer runs to minimize joints.

Meets requirements for 36 in and 42 in railing heights when installed per guide under both 2021 International Building Code (IBC) and 2021 International Residential Code (IRC). ICC-ES Report ESR-4217 provides the documentation contractors need for inspectors.
