RailFX Glass Rail System with 1/4" Tempered Glass Infill

RailFX’s glass rail system delivers unobstructed views through 1/4-inch tempered glass panels supported by 6063-T6 aluminum posts and rails. The system meets 2021 IRC/IBC requirements for 200-lb concentrated load while allowing maximum 60-inch post spacing — giving contractors flexibility to minimize posts and maximize views. Montana contractors value the wind-break performance for elevated decks exposed to valley winds, plus the ability to source glass locally rather than shipping fragile panels across the state.

Technical Specifications and Montana Performance

The 6063-T6 aluminum construction handles Montana’s temperature swings without the warping issues that plague vinyl systems. Posts space up to 5 feet apart for glass applications, though most contractors stick to 4-foot centers for easier glass handling.

The glass panels aren’t supplied by RailFX — customers source locally. For 36-inch rail systems, order 29-inch height glass. For 42-inch systems, 35-inch height. This local sourcing approach saves Montana contractors from shipping fragile glass across hundreds of miles.

Five top rail profiles give contractors options to match architectural styles:

  • RFX100: Round top rail, graspable
  • RFX200: Flat top rail, level use
  • RFX250: Square top rail, graspable
  • RFX300: Elliptical top rail, level use
  • RFX400: Flat top rail, accepts wood or composite cap

The RFX400 matters for contractors matching existing wood deck caps or creating hybrid designs. Field-trimable components mean less waste when dealing with odd deck dimensions.

Installation Flexibility and Wind Performance

Three mounting options — surface mount, fascia mount, or flush mount — adapt to different deck configurations. Surface mount with base plates works for most composite and wood decks. Fascia mount positions posts 1-1/4 inches from fascia using brackets. Flush mount sets posts in concrete with grout for patio applications.

Installation follows predictable steps:

  1. Install wood blocking (1-1/2” thick) if mounting on a deck
  2. Position and secure posts ensuring plumb alignment
  3. Attach rail-connecting blocks (RCB) to posts
  4. Install bottom rail and top rail (trim to length as needed)
  5. Insert vinyl gaskets and glass picket fillers into rail channels
  6. Seat the 1/4” tempered glass panel into the gaskets

The integrated gasket system holds glass securely without visible clips or hardware. Pre-drilled posts speed installation, though blank posts allow custom spacing.

The system’s excellent wind break capability matters in Montana’s exposed locations. Glass panels block wind while preserving views — crucial for hillside homes in Whitefish or lakefront properties on Flathead Lake.

FAQ

What’s included with the RailFX system versus what needs local sourcing?

Standard components include aluminum posts, top and bottom rail extrusions, Rail Connector Blocks, vinyl gaskets, glass picket fillers, and mounting hardware. Glass panels must be sourced locally — RailFX doesn’t ship glass.

How does the warranty coverage work for aluminum components?

Aluminum posts, rails, and fittings carry a Limited Lifetime Warranty against structural defects and finish failure (AAMA 2604). Labor coverage runs 4 years prorated — 100% year 1, 75% year 2, 50% year 3, 25% year 4.

Can this system work on stairs?

Yes. Compatible with stair-angled connector blocks and RFXADA sub-rail for ADA compliance on commercial projects.

What finish holds up best in Montana weather?

All stock colors (Black, White, Bronze, Silver) meet AAMA 2604 powder coat specifications for weather resistance. Bronze and black hide dirt better than white in dusty summer conditions.

How does local glass sourcing actually save money?

Shipping tempered glass from manufacturers risks breakage and adds freight costs. Local glass shops in Kalispell, Missoula, or Great Falls can cut to exact dimensions and deliver intact. Plus, replacements come quickly if needed.
