RailFX Basic 102 Series Cable Kit

The RailFX Basic 102 Series solves the cable railing tensioning problem without expensive swagging tools. This through-post system uses Type 316 Marine-Grade Stainless Steel construction with a Pull-Lock non-tensioning fitting that any contractor can install. At 4.9/5 rating from users, it handles runs up to 70 ft — perfect for Montana’s larger deck projects.

Montana contractors building elevated decks need hardware that survives freeze-thaw cycles and handles long spans. The 102 Series delivers both.

Pull-Lock System Eliminates Swagging Headaches

Traditional cable railings require specialized swagging tools that cost hundreds and take practice to master. RailFX ditched that approach. The Pull-Lock non-tensioning fitting lets contractors tension cables without any swagging equipment. Just thread the cable through, pull tight, and lock.

The kit includes the RFXPL-KEY (Pull-Lock release key) for adjustments. No rental fees. No learning curve. The system works with standard tools most contractors already own:

Required ToolsPurpose
Drill bits: 5/32”, 7/32”, 1/4”, 1/2”, or 29/64”Post holes (varies by material)
1/8” hex wrenchHardware adjustment
7/16” wrenchNut tightening
Cable cut-off kit (mandrel and wheel)Clean cable trimming

The 2-7/8” (or 2.75”) Pre-swagged Threaded Stud with brass hex nut and end cap comes pre-attached to one end. No field swagging needed.

Marine-Grade Steel Handles Montana Weather

Type 316 Marine-Grade Stainless Steel isn’t marketing fluff. Type 316 contains molybdenum, which resists chloride corrosion better than standard 304 stainless. For Montana’s road salt exposure and temperature swings, that chemistry matters.

The cable uses 1x19 strand construction — 19 individual wires twisted into a single cable. This configuration balances flexibility for installation with stiffness for minimal sag. Available in both 1/8 inch (Standard) and 3/16 inch (Available) diameters, with 1/8” handling most residential applications.

Regular cleaning is recommended, especially in coastal or salt-water environments, though Montana’s dry climate reduces maintenance compared to coastal installations. The Limited Warranty (effective 9.12.2022) covers the aluminum system components and stainless steel hardware.

Length Options Match Real Projects

Ordering cable usually means buying 500-foot spools and eating the waste. RailFX offers 10 pre-cut lengths:

Length Options
5 ft
10 ft
15 ft
20 ft
25 ft
30 ft
40 ft
50 ft
60 ft
70 ft

That 70-foot option matters for Montana’s sprawling deck designs. The cable Can be cut to exact length on-site, eliminating callbacks for minor adjustments.

Corner posts require planning. The system handles a Maximum 45 degree bend per run. For 90 degree turns require a double-corner post configuration — standard practice but worth noting during layout.

Installation Process

The through-post design means visible hardware, but RailFX includes decorative caps that create a finished appearance. Installation follows this sequence:

  1. Plan the layout and locate post positions
  2. Drill holes through the end and intermediate posts
  3. Install the threaded stud into the first end post and secure with brass nut
  4. Lace the cable through intermediate posts
  5. Install the Pull-Lock fitting on the opposite end post
  6. Tension the cable using the Pull-Lock mechanism
  7. Trim excess cable and apply the decorative end cap

The system works with both Wood posts and Metal posts (Stainless steel, Galvanized). Applications span Residential decks and Commercial railing projects, with configurations for Straight/Level runs, Stair runs, and Pitched runs.

Basic 102 fittings extend through the back of the post and are visible (covered by caps), while higher-end series may offer completely concealed fittings. For projects where hardware visibility matters, understand this limitation upfront.

Code Compliance

The kit addresses building code requirements when properly installed. Designed for IBC (International Building Code) and IRC (International Residential Code) compliance when installed according to local building codes (e.g., <4” cable spacing). Montana follows these codes, making the system suitable for permitted projects.

California Proposition 65 warning (listed on retailer sites) appears on packaging — standard for stainless steel products.

The Verdict

RailFX Basic 102 Series makes cable railing accessible for contractors who don’t want to invest in swagging equipment. The Pull-Lock system works. The marine-grade stainless holds up. The 70-foot capability handles Montana’s deck scales.

This isn’t the sleekest system — Basic 102 (Classic) is a through-the-post solution, whereas the Professional 224 (Low Profile) is a hidden-in-post solution. But for straightforward cable railing that installs without specialty tools, the 102 Series delivers professional results.

Perfect for contractors tackling their first cable project or pros who need a system that doesn’t require hauling swagging gear to every job site.
