MoistureShield Navigator Stair Rail Kit Guide

MoistureShield’s Navigator line delivers the only composite railing system engineered for silent operation — no squeaks, no rattles. The system features a paintable acrylic cap stock that looks and feels like real wood, setting it apart from the glossy vinyl-capped Discovery and Traverse lines. This premium composite railing offers three infill options: square vinyl/composite (1-1/8”), round aluminum (3/4”), or stainless steel cable (1/8”).

Silent Engineering and Premium Materials

Navigator’s hidden bracket system with concealed fasteners creates a clean look while delivering engineered silent operation. That’s a specific performance claim competitors don’t make. The system achieves this through Solid Core™ composite construction with a paintable acrylic cap stock.

The acrylic cap changes everything. While Discovery features a traditional ‘bread-loaf’ profile with a glossy finish and vinyl cap, Navigator delivers a premium satin acrylic finish. Traverse uses a traditional T-rail profile with a glossy finish, but Navigator offers more architectural top rail styles. That Satin White finish that looks and feels like real wood accepts paint for complete customization — try that with vinyl-capped alternatives.

Installation and Code Compliance

The system meets IRC and IBC building codes, backed by report PFS-TECO BPER-0142 for Solid Core Railing. Navigator comes in 36” and 42” heights with 6’ and 8’ lengths.

The stair kit installation follows a straightforward sequence:

  • Measure stair stringer angle and distance between posts
  • Cut top beam and bottom beam cover to length with specific angles for Contempo/Capital styles
  • Mount hidden brackets to posts using supplied fasteners
  • Install chosen infill (balusters or cable) into brackets
  • Secure top rail cover (sold separately) over the top beam
  • Verify rail height of 36” and gap spacing to ensure code compliance

What’s Included vs. What You’ll Buy Separately

Standard kit components include the top beam for internal support, bottom beam cover, concealed brackets, and fasteners. Square baluster kits include the balusters within the kit, while aluminum and cable beam kits typically require infill to be sold separately.

Here’s what doesn’t come in the box: top rail covers in Capital, Contempo, or Graspable styles, posts and post sleeves, and post caps. That top rail cover matters — it determines the final look and graspability for stair applications.

Montana Installation Considerations

Navigator’s superior moisture resistance means it won’t rot, splinter, warp, or stain — critical for Montana’s freeze-thaw cycles. The Made in the USA designation matters to contractors who track domestic content for project requirements.

Navigator carries a transferable limited lifetime warranty covering rot, splintering, warping, and staining under normal use. The warranty transfers to subsequent owners, protecting resale value.

FAQ

Q: What makes Navigator different from other MoistureShield railing lines?

A: Navigator features engineered silent operation with no squeaks or rattles through its hidden bracket system. The paintable acrylic cap with satin white finish looks and feels like real wood, unlike the glossy vinyl caps on Discovery and Traverse lines.

Q: Can I mix Navigator components with other MoistureShield systems?

A: Navigator works with MoistureShield Navigator posts, caps, and post sleeves, Navigator Top Rail Adapters for custom angles, and is compatible with gate kits, ADA components, and lighting accessories (wired/solar). Don’t mix with Discovery or Traverse components.

Q: What infill options work with Navigator stair rails?

A: Three options: Square Vinyl/Composite at 1-1/8”, Round Aluminum at 3/4”, or Stainless Steel Cable at 1/8”. Each creates a different aesthetic while maintaining the system’s silent operation.

Q: Do I need special tools for installation?

A: Standard carpentry tools handle the job. Brackets conceal behind the rail for a seamless appearance. The system uses supplied fasteners to mount hidden brackets to posts.
