A Buyer's Guide to Clips, Joists, and Finishing Hardware
Decking & RailingDecking accessories are the structural and finishing parts that hold a deck together and make it look finished — hidden clips, joists, edge trim, fasteners, and the tools that install them. They aren’t optional extras. The right clip, the right joist spacing, and the right fastener material are what keep a deck flat, tight, and squeak-free through years of Montana freeze-thaw. The wrong choices show up as bounce, uneven gaps, pooling water, and loose boards.
Here’s the core principle: your subframe has to be level, because accessories cannot fix an uneven frame. Get the bones right first. Then choose components based on your board material and your exposure.
Hidden fasteners are the most common accessory and the biggest driver of a clean, long-lasting surface. Deck clips are part of the deck that nobody wants to see — and good composite clips are designed to be totally hidden, two for each board, supporting and holding the deck together without an unsightly break in its appearance.
There are three clip jobs to understand. Locking clips completely lock down and secure your boards so they don’t move at all once clipped in. CEC, or control expansion and contraction clips, have some give to allow the board to expand or contract. Starting clips — also called start or starter clips — are used for the boards at either end of the deck, where it starts.
You’ll use more than one type. Both CEC clips and locking clips belong in an installation, but where they go depends on the conditions surrounding the deck. The locking clip earns its keep on certain layouts — it allows one side of the board to move while the other side stays locked down, so adjacent boards can expand and contract without conflict. That’s especially designed for decks installed in a brick-style pattern.
The whole point is controlled movement. The system lets the installer place the board with proper gapping and prevents warping or distortion in all seasons. That matters here. Montana’s seasonal temperature swings move composite boards, and gapping has to absorb it.
Spacing is straightforward. Use one clip per board-to-joist intersection; at butt joints, double both the clips and the joists.
One non-negotiable before you buy: clips must match the board’s grooved-edge profile. A clip that doesn’t fit your board’s groove is wasted money. Confirm compatibility first.

The wrong fastener material is one of the fastest ways to shorten a deck’s life. Cost matters less than corrosion resistance and freeze-thaw performance. Use 304 or 316 stainless steel clips for durability, or high-strength engineering plastics for cost efficiency.
Run through this checklist before buying: board profile, exposure, and traffic level. Always match fastener types to your board profile — grooved versus square edge. Exposure here means freeze-thaw, sun hours, and any chemical contact. If you’re in a high-corrosion setting, marine-grade A4 stainless steel fasteners prevent corrosion. For most Montana decks, that coastal worry doesn’t apply — but the freeze-thaw cycling does, and that’s where corrosion-resistant stainless or a quality-coated fastener pays off over the years.
Screws follow the same logic. Color-matched composite screws create a clean finish on post finishing profiles and can be used instead of start and end clips at the decking edges. Stainless trim-head and edge screws round out the fastener picture for hardwood and composite work alike.
Most mystery problems start in the frame. Bounce, uneven gaps, loose fasteners — none of it gets fixed by accessories after the fact.
Spacing is your first decision. Space joists 300–400 mm — roughly 12 to 16 inches — apart depending on load and board type. Standard residential work runs near 16 inches on center. Tighten to 12 inches for high-traffic areas, heavy loads, or diagonal board layouts. For decks carrying snow load, tighter spacing and added blocking reduce deflection and the stress that loosens clips over time.
Joist material options each have trade-offs. Composite joists exist as a rot-proof choice — made from the same composite material as the deck boards, rot-proof and maintenance-free, designed for installation on flat concrete slabs. The trade-off is that composite is non-structural in this form. It’s laid flat directly on a concrete slab for a simple, durable installation — reliable support, but not a structural span member. For a structural solution on blocks or pedestals, a reversible aluminum joist allows a durable installation on blocks and lets you make the joints directly on the joist.
Protect wood joists. Joist and flashing tape shields the top of the framing where water sits and runs. Pair that with good airflow underneath — an anodised aluminum ventilation grille, clip- or screw-fixed, optimises air circulation beneath the deck. Moisture retention is the enemy through wet spring melt, and ventilation cuts it.
Level the joist plane before fastening a single board. Add blocking at board ends, seams, and stair transitions.
Edges are where people judge the work. Exposed board cores and ragged cuts make a premium deck look unfinished.
Fascia and perimeter strips do the visual heavy lifting. Fascia boards run along the edge of the deck just below the surface, partially concealing the joists for a finished appearance. You can use fascia on its own or with a perimeter strip for added detail, and choose a contrasting color to define the deck’s edge. For the picture-frame look, perimeter strips finish the outside edge and need to be mitered to picture-frame the deck — and if there’s a rail system, install the perimeter strips at the posts.
End caps are not cosmetic only. End caps cap the end of a hollow composite board, helping prevent moisture, dirt, and insect infiltration into the hollow center while giving a finished look. For best results, use a flexible, durable sealant designed for exterior use.

This rule is the one people break and regret: avoid adhesives on the main structural boards — they must be free to expand and contract with temperature changes. Glue belongs only on small trims and end caps, never the main field of boards. Lock the field down with adhesive and Montana’s temperature swings will warp it.
