How to Choose Knobs, Pulls, Hinges, and Slides
CabinetsCabinet hardware is the cheapest line item in any kitchen and the one your hands touch a thousand times a week. Get the type, size, and finish right and a kitchen looks finished. Get it wrong and something feels off in a way most people can’t name. Cabinet hardware is inexpensive relative to every other element of a kitchen renovation, and it’s also one of the most impactful finishing decisions you’ll make.
Two camps exist here. The decorative stuff you see — knobs and pulls. And the mechanical stuff you don’t — hinges and drawer slides, the parts nobody notices until they fail. Both matter. This guide walks through choosing each.

Knobs. A cabinet knob is a single-point piece that mounts with one screw through a single hole in the door or drawer front, projecting from the surface to provide a grip point. That single hole makes them dead simple to retrofit. Their compact footprint suits cabinet doors where a larger piece would look oversized. The trade-off is grip — a knob provides less surface area than a pull, which makes it less suited to heavy drawers or wide doors that need more leverage. Pulls. A cabinet pull uses two screws set at a fixed center-to-center distance. Here’s the structural reason pulls win on drawers: a pull’s two-point grip distributes the opening force more evenly across the drawer front, reducing the racking stress that knobs place on a single-point mount over time.
Bar pulls. A subset of the pull category defined by a straight, cylindrical bar that runs parallel to the cabinet surface, mounted at each end with a screw. The defining characteristic is clean, unadorned geometry — and that simplicity is exactly why bar pulls have become the dominant choice in modern and contemporary kitchens. They run from 5 inches up to 18 inches or more. Bar pulls scale extremely well — the same profile that works on a small drawer pull works on an 18-inch appliance handle, creating visual continuity across the kitchen.
Cup pulls. Also called bin pulls, these are U-shaped pulls that mount at the center of a drawer front. Their vintage, somewhat industrial character makes them a natural choice for farmhouse and transitional kitchens, and they’re particularly popular on lower drawer banks and base cabinets where their scale reads well.
The convention works for a reason. A cabinet door swings on a hinge and requires only enough grip to pull it away from the frame — a single knob provides that with minimal footprint, and its compact shape doesn’t interfere with panel detail the way a horizontal pull can. But you’re not locked in. Using a single pull type on every surface creates a cleaner, more unified look that suits modern and minimalist kitchens especially well.
This is where DIY jobs go sideways. Hardware sizing is the area where well-intentioned DIY decisions most frequently go wrong. The proportional relationship between hardware size and door or drawer size is what separates a finished kitchen from a polished one.
Center-to-center — CTC — is the number that matters on pulls. It’s the distance between screw holes; common standards include 96mm, 128mm, and 160mm.

For drawer pulls, scale to the drawer: a 3–4 inch pull for short drawers up to 18 inches wide, 4–6 inch for standard drawers 18 to 24 inches, and an 8–12 inch pull or full-width bar for wide drawers. The shorthand most pros use is the rule of thirds — pull length should be roughly one-third the width of the drawer.

For placement, the natural hand position drives it. On upper cabinet doors, set the knob or pull in the lower corner closest to the center of the kitchen. On lower cabinet doors, set it in the upper corner closest to the center — that’s the natural hand position when opening base cabinets. Drawers get a centered pull.
Finish is the most visible call you’ll make. A few options worth knowing.
Brushed and satin nickel are the reliable workhorse — cool-toned, clean, universally compatible. Brushed nickel has been the dominant finish for twenty years and remains a safe, quality choice. It coordinates effortlessly with stainless appliances and chrome fixtures. If you’re uncertain, brushed nickel is never wrong.
Matte black creates a bold, graphic punctuation in white and light-colored kitchens that reads as sophisticated and contemporary. It pairs exceptionally well with flat-front and full-overlay shaker doors.
Brass is everywhere right now. Polished brass and satin brass are both strong choices; unlacquered brass, which develops a natural patina over time, is the romantic choice for those who want a lived-in, warm feel. Know what you’re signing up for: unlacquered brass will change — it develops darker tones and variation over time. Some people love this, others find it looks dirty. Know which camp you’re in before you commit.
Two more from the traditional end. Chrome is polished, bright, and reflective — more formal in character than brushed nickel. This is the mechanical stuff that decides whether your cabinets still work in twenty years. Hinges aren’t always seen, but they’re important for the correct functioning of doors — they influence the alignment and the life of your cabinets.
Hinges. A few types to know. Concealed hinges hide inside the cabinet for a clean look and are adjustable. Soft-close hinges prevent doors from slamming, giving quiet operation and increased durability. European hinges are common in frameless cabinets, and butt hinges are the visible style used in traditional cabinetry. Selection depends on box construction. Choose based on length — full overlay, partial overlay, or inset — with inset running around 10mm and overlay 13 to 16mm. Knobs or pulls — which is better? Neither, flatly. There’s a long-standing logic behind knobs on doors and pulls on drawers: drawers are heavier and move straight out, so pulling from two mounting points provides better balance and control, while doors swing on hinges and a single knob gives a natural pivot point. Pulls win on grip — they’re often easier to use, especially for people with limited mobility or strength, because you can wrap your whole hand around the handle.
How do I size a pull for a drawer? Use the rule of thirds. Pull length should be roughly one-third the width of the drawer. In practice that means a 3–4 inch pull for drawers up to 18 inches wide and a 4–6 inch pull for standard drawers 18 to 24 inches.
