Titebond Fast Set Construction Adhesive, 28 oz

Titebond Fast Set Construction Adhesive is a moisture-cured polyurethane that bonds to wet and frozen lumber down to 32°F. The 28 oz cartridge formula works in conditions where other adhesives fail — making it a serious contender for Montana contractors who can’t wait for perfect weather.

Skip it if you’re just doing interior trim work in heated spaces. PL Premium costs less and works fine when moisture isn’t a factor. This adhesive shines on subfloors, exterior decking, and anywhere you’re fighting Montana’s temperature swings.

Performance in Montana Conditions

The 32°F to 120°F application range covers most of Montana’s construction season. More importantly, the -20°F to 250°F service temperature means whatever you glue stays glued through Montana winters.

The moisture-cure chemistry is what sets this apart. While solvent-based adhesives need dry surfaces, this polyurethane actually uses ambient moisture to cure — it bonds to wet, frozen, and treated lumber. That’s huge when you’re framing in May and the lumber’s still damp from spring rain.

Full cure happens in 24 hours, but you’ve got 10-20 minutes of open time to get materials positioned. The high viscosity creates a no-drool bead — it stays where you put it instead of running down vertical surfaces.

Coverage and Material Planning

The 28 oz cartridge delivers predictable coverage based on bead size. Here’s what contractors actually get:

Bead SizeCoverage per Cartridge
1/8 inch355 ft
1/4 inch86 ft
3/8 inch39 ft
1/2 inch21 ft

For subfloor installation, most contractors run a 1/4 inch bead. That gives you 86 feet per cartridge — enough for about 2.5 sheets of 4x8 OSB with standard joist spacing. The 3/8 inch bead for heavier applications cuts that coverage in half.

Users note the high viscosity requires a quality caulking gun. Don’t try to squeeze this through a bargain-bin gun in cold weather — you’ll blow out the plunger.

Subfloor Warranty and Certifications

Titebond backs this adhesive with their Lifetime Platinum Subfloor Warranty — their best subfloor guarantee. That’s confidence-inspiring when you’re gluing down the bones of someone’s house.

The certifications tell the technical story:

  • ASTM D3498-19 certified as Class 1/8 in., Type P/O subfloor adhesive
  • APA AFG-01 compliant
  • ASTM C557 approved
  • Canadian standards: CAN/CGSB-71.25M & CAN/CGSB-71.26M

The LEED v4 Low-Emitting Materials Credit matters for commercial work. With less than 50 g/L VOC content, it meets the strictest air quality requirements.

Installation Tips

Surface prep is straightforward — surfaces must be clean and free from materials that prevent adhesion, but they can be wet or frozen. Cut the nozzle at 45° to your desired bead size and apply to one surface. Join materials within 10-20 minutes.

For subfloors, apply to joists one sheet at a time. Don’t slide panels into position — place them and fasten per APA guidelines. Use a slight twisting motion when joining parts to ensure full coverage.

Clean up requires mineral spirits before cure. Once it’s set, you’re scraping or sanding it off.

FAQ

How does Titebond Fast Set compare to Loctite PL Premium?

Titebond Fast Set has higher viscosity for a no-drool bead and faster initial grab than standard PL Premium. PL Premium Fast Grab closes some of that gap on initial tack, but Titebond Fast Set generally performs better in extreme temperatures. PL Premium is often cheaper, making it the budget choice when conditions aren’t challenging.

Can this adhesive really bond to frozen lumber?

Yes — it’s specifically formulated to bond to wet, frozen, and treated lumber. The moisture-cure chemistry uses whatever water is present, whether it’s ice crystals or liquid. This capability is repeatedly praised in reviews, especially for difficult materials.

What materials won’t this adhesive stick to?

It’s not suitable for continuous submersion or bonding to polyethylene, polypropylene, silicone, or PTFE (non-stick plastics). Compatible materials include all lumber types (solid, engineered, treated, wet, frozen), stone, concrete, metal, landscaping blocks, brick, drywall, plastic, foam, and mirrors.

What’s the difference between this and Titebond PROvantage Heavy Duty?

PROvantage is solvent-based while Fast Set is polyurethane-based. Fast Set offers better waterproofing, higher strength, and compatibility with a wider range of materials including foam and mirrors. The polyurethane chemistry is what enables the wet/frozen lumber bonding.

Does this adhesive require a special caulking gun?

You need a standard 28-29 oz (large) caulking gun — not included with the adhesive. The high viscosity means a quality gun matters — especially in cold weather when the adhesive thickens further.
