Moen 2-Handle Faucet Cartridge #1224

The Moen 1224 cartridge fixes the single most common service call — a leaking two-handle faucet. This genuine OEM replacement costs less than an hour of plumber time and stops drips immediately. The washerless design works on either hot or cold side, fitting most Moen two-handle kitchen and bathroom faucets built over the past 30 years.

Compatibility and Installation

The 1224 and 1224B are physically and functionally identical. The ‘B’ suffix typically denotes ‘Bulk’ or retail multipacks (e.g., 2-pack or 4-pack), whereas the 1224 is the standard single retail unit. Both versions fit the same valve bodies.

Fits most double-handle Moen faucets including Moen Monticello, Lexie, Findlay series, Moen 4997 valve (prior to 6/00), Moen T6125 (pre-12/2014). The cartridge works in Moen 2-handle kitchen faucets (e.g., Lexie), Moen 2-handle bathroom faucets (e.g., Findlay, Monticello), Certain Moen 2 and 3-handle tub/shower valves, Bar, Prep, and Laundry/Utility sinks.

It differs from the 1225 (single-handle) and 1255 (ceramic disc) cartridges which are used in different valve designs. Know your valve type before ordering — single-handle faucets won’t take this cartridge.

Installation runs about 20 minutes if the old cartridge comes out clean:

  1. Shut off water supply and open faucet handles to relieve pressure. Remove handle covers and screws to pull handles off. Unscrew the cartridge nut with pliers or the 14272 removal tool.
  2. Extract the old cartridge by pulling the stem straight up. Flush the valve body with water to clear any sediment. Align the cartridge notches with the valve body slots and insert.
  3. Reinstall the nut and handles; check for leaks.

The catch: Old cartridge can be difficult to pull out (requires 14272 tool). Years of Montana’s hard water can cement that cartridge in place. The 14272 removal tool threads onto the cartridge stem and provides leverage to break it free. Without it, you’re looking at valve body damage trying to pry the thing out.

Construction and Performance

Nonmetallic (ABS plastic) and stainless steel components make up the cartridge body. The Pre-lubricated O-rings come ready to install — no hunting for plumber’s grease. Washerless design (hot or cold side) means one cartridge works in either position, cutting inventory needs in half.

Cost Analysis and Warranty

The 1224 delivers immediate payback. Service call avoided equals money earned. Stops faucet leaks immediately according to customer feedback, with 4.5 stars from 2,700+ reviews backing up the performance claims.

Moen replacement parts carry a 1-year limited warranty. For original homeowners, the cartridge may be eligible for a free replacement under Moen’s Limited Lifetime Faucet Warranty. That lifetime coverage matters for homeowners doing their own maintenance — keep the receipt and Moen stands behind the part.

The plastic components draw some criticism. Some durability concerns with plastic components in older models surface in reviews, though the 4.5-star average suggests most installations perform well. For a part that prevents hundreds in water damage, the plastic construction represents acceptable value engineering.

Issues with handle orientation/rotation if not aligned correctly remind installers to pay attention during reassembly. Match those notches to the valve body slots or deal with backwards handles.

The 1224 delivers what contractors need: predictable compatibility, reasonable durability, and immediate leak stoppage. Keep a few in the truck and turn dripping faucets into quick service wins.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s included with the Moen 1224 cartridge? The package includes 1224 Replacement Cartridge, Pre-greased O-rings, and Installation manual (in retail packaging). Everything needed for a standard replacement except the removal tool.

Are special tools needed to remove the old cartridge? If the cartridge has been in service more than a few years, yes. Old cartridge can be difficult to pull out (requires 14272 tool). The 14272 removal tool threads onto the stem and provides the leverage to break mineral deposits holding the cartridge.

What certifications does this cartridge carry? The cartridge meets ADA Compliant (with compatible handles), NSF 61/9 (Drinking Water System Components), NSF 372 (Lead Content), and California Proposition 65 Warning requirements.

Will this cartridge work in single-handle Moen faucets? No. It differs from the 1225 (single-handle) and 1255 (ceramic disc) cartridges which are used in different valve designs. The 1224 only fits two-handle valves.

What’s the difference between 1224 and 1224B? Nothing functional. The 1224 and 1224B are physically and functionally identical. The ‘B’ suffix typically denotes ‘Bulk’ or retail multipacks (e.g., 2-pack or 4-pack), whereas the 1224 is the standard single retail unit.
