Loctite PL 300 Foamboard Adhesive 10oz

Loctite PL 300 is a blue, water-based latex adhesive specifically designed for bonding all types of foamboard insulation. Unlike general-purpose heavy duty adhesives that may have higher VOCs, this adhesive won’t “burn through” or degrade the R-value of foam insulation — critical when you’re paying for every bit of thermal performance in Montana’s climate.

The biggest advantage? VOC content under 50 g/L (1% by weight). That matters when you’re sealing up tight for energy efficiency but still need decent indoor air quality during those long Montana winters.

Foam Compatibility & Temperature Performance

PL 300 works with Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), Extruded Polystyrene (XPS), and Polyurethane foam. The adhesive maintains flexibility after curing, which matters when foam panels expand and contract through temperature swings.

SpecificationValue
Service Temperature Range0°F to 170°F
Application Temperature Range40°F to 100°F
Open Time20 minutes
Full Cure Time7 days (varies with temperature, humidity, and substrate porosity)

The service temperature range from 0°F to 170°F handles Montana’s temperature extremes. You can’t apply it below 40°F, which limits late-season work, but once cured it’ll survive -30°F nights without failing.

Coverage & Application

A 10oz cartridge covers approximately 30.6 linear feet with a 1/4” bead, or 13.6 linear feet with a 3/8” bead. That’s precise enough for accurate material estimates.

Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of dust, oil, or loose debris. At least one surface must be porous. Apply adhesive in a continuous bead or spot pattern to either the foam board or substrate. Press together and hold/brace until the bond sets (~20 minutes).

The permanent bond that remains flexible is what you want for foam installations. Rigid adhesives crack when foam moves. This stays put.

Compatible and Incompatible Materials

Compatible materials include unfaced Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), Extruded Polystyrene (XPS), Polyurethane foam, Rigid Polystyrene, Wood, Concrete, Non-glazed brick, and Gypsum board (drywall).

Incompatible materials include Polyethylene (PE), Polypropylene (PP), PTFE (Teflon), Acrylic, Glazed surfaces (e.g., ceramic tile), Film-faced foam insulation panels, and Polyethylene vapor barriers. If you’re working with faced foam panels or vapor barriers, you’ll need a different adhesive.

The Verdict

PL 300 fills a specific niche — foam-safe adhesion with low VOCs. The high ‘grab’ reduces the need for mechanical fasteners, saving installation time. Weather-resistant and weather-proof once cured, it handles Montana’s moisture cycles.

Skip it for general construction adhesive needs. The larger 28 oz size offers the same formulation for bigger projects. But if you’re bonding foam insulation and care about indoor air quality, this specialized formula delivers what cheaper adhesives can’t — protection for both your R-value investment and your lungs.

FAQ

What’s the working time before PL 300 starts to set?

You have 20 minutes of open time to reposition materials after application. Once positioned, brace until the initial bond sets.

Can PL 300 be used on faced foam insulation?

No. Film-faced foam insulation panels are listed as incompatible materials. The adhesive needs at least one porous surface to bond properly.

How should uncured PL 300 be cleaned up?

Clean tools and residue immediately with water (wet cleanup) while the adhesive is still wet. Cured adhesive must be carefully cut away with a sharp-edged tool.

Does PL 300 damage foam insulation R-values?

No. It will not “burn through” or degrade the R-value of foam insulation, unlike some solvent-based adhesives that can melt or compromise foam boards.

What’s the shelf life of an unopened cartridge?

24 months from date of manufacture when stored unopened at 70°F ± 5°F in a cool, dry place.
