Leviton GFTR1 Series: Self-Test GFCI Receptacles With Slim Profile Design

The GFTR1 series delivers tamper-resistant GFCI protection that actually fits in Montana’s older electrical boxes. Automatically tests itself on power-up and periodically to ensure protection — eliminating the monthly test button ritual nobody remembers to do. Reduced depth for easier installation in shallow electrical boxes makes this the GFCI you reach for when retrofitting homes built before modern box depths became standard.

Self-Test SmartlockPro Technology

The self-test mechanism changes the GFCI game. Tests automatically on power-up within 3 seconds, then continues periodic testing throughout its life. When it detects a problem, patented lockout action prevents reset if the GFCI is damaged or fails to respond to a fault. No more wondering if that old GFCI in the garage actually works.

LED status indicator provides visual feedback on power status and trip condition. Green means protected. Red means investigate. The improved immunity reduces nuisance tripping from high-frequency noise — critical in shops running variable-speed motors or welders.

The temperature range covers Montana’s worst — from January deep freezes to August heat waves. Self-grounding clip provides reliable grounding connection directly to the metal box, saving time on pigtails. Back and side wired with external back-wire clamps gives installation flexibility whether you’re working new construction or cramped retrofits.

Where It Beats Standard GFCIs

The GFTR1-W is part of the ‘slim’ series, significantly easier to fit into older, shallower wall boxes compared to standard GFCI units. That slim profile matters in pre-1980s Montana homes where shallow boxes are the norm. Extremely easy to install due to slim profile. Back-wiring clamps provide secure and fast connections.

Users report visual LED indicator is helpful for troubleshooting — especially in basements and garages where you need to know protection status at a glance. The downsides? Tamper-resistant shutters can be stiff for some plugs and single-unit pricing is higher than standard receptacles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How does the self-test feature actually work? Automatically tests itself on power-up and periodically to ensure protection. The unit performs a complete diagnostic within three seconds of receiving power, then continues automatic testing throughout its service life. If it ever fails a self-test, the lockout mechanism prevents reset until the problem is fixed.

Q: Will this fit in my 1960s house with shallow boxes? Reduced depth for easier installation in shallow electrical boxes. The GFTR1-W is part of the ‘slim’ series, significantly easier to fit into older, shallower wall boxes compared to standard GFCI units. Still measure your box depth first, but this slim design solves most shallow box headaches.

Q: What’s included with the GFTR1-W? 15A Decora GFCI Receptacle (White), Matching Nylon Decora Wallplate, Installation Screws, Instruction Sheet. Everything needed for a complete installation except the wire nuts.

Q: Can this protect downstream outlets? Can protect downstream standard receptacles when wired to the ‘Load’ terminals. One GFCI can protect multiple standard outlets on the same circuit when wired correctly.

Q: What’s the warranty coverage? 2-Year Limited Warranty; Covers defects in material and workmanship under normal use. Standard for the industry, though nothing spectacular.
