Fortress EZ Mount Standard Baluster Connectors: Hidden Installation That Actually Works

The Fortress EZ Mount Standard connectors solve the ugliest problem in deck railing — those visible baluster holes that collect ice and rot out rails. Each box contains 20 nylon connectors and 20 stainless steel screws, covering 10 balusters.

The connectors eliminate drilling 3/4” holes in rails while protecting metal balusters from ACQ lumber corrosion — two problems that plague Montana deck builders dealing with freeze-thaw cycles and treated lumber chemistry.

Installation Speed and Material Protection

Montana contractors deal with short building seasons and ACQ-treated lumber that eats through unprotected metal faster than morning frost. The EZ Mount system addresses both issues.

No drilling of 3/4” holes required. Mark baluster positions on top and bottom rails. Screw the EZ Mount connectors into the rail using the provided stainless steel screws. Slide the 3/4” round baluster over the mounted EZ Mounts. Ensure 2 EZ Mounts are used per baluster (one top, one bottom).

That’s the entire installation. No hole saws, no measuring drill depth, no blowing sawdust out of 40 holes per section. The nylon material protects metal balusters from ACQ lumber corrosion and prevents staining caused by condensation. In Montana’s moisture-heavy spring and fall, that condensation protection matters. Water trapped between metal balusters and ACQ lumber creates galvanic corrosion that’ll eat through powder coating in two seasons.

Professional contractors view these connectors as eliminating the need for drilling 3/4” holes, which simplifies the process and reduces labor time. On a 40-foot deck with balusters every 4 inches, that’s 120 holes you’re not drilling.

The stair version runs different dimensions: 3/4” x 3/4” x 1” for 35-37.5 degree angles. That quarter-inch height difference accommodates the angle without binding.

Compatible with wood, composite, or vinyl rail systems and designed for 3/4” round Vintage or Mega series balusters. Standard fits Vintage series; Mega EZ Mounts (640053) are designed for the slightly larger Mega series 3/4” round balusters.

The product title lists dimensions as 0.89 in. H X 0.75 in. W X 0.75 in. L, which aligns with the 3/4” specifications when accounting for manufacturing tolerances.

Real-World Performance

Users report that these mounts make installation much faster and cleaner looking by avoiding large holes. The nylon material is praised for durability and corrosion resistance. With an average rating of 4.6 from 5 reviews, contractors aren’t finding major failures.

EZ Mount is completely hidden inside the baluster, whereas some universal connectors may have a visible collar. That hidden design prevents ice buildup in connector holes — a real issue when Montana’s freeze-thaw cycles turn water into an expansion tool.

Covered by Fortress Baluster Limited Warranty (typically 15-25 years depending on the series; covers manufacturing defects and material failure). Designed to meet residential and commercial building codes (IRC/IBC) when installed as part of a compliant Fortress railing system.

The system works for residential and commercial deck railing and interior and exterior staircases. For contractors who’ve dealt with rotted-out baluster holes or corrosion stains on composite decking, the hidden installation and ACQ protection solve real jobsite problems.

FAQ

What’s included in each box? Each box contains 20 connectors and 20 screws, which covers 10 balusters. Add the cost of the balusters themselves and labor.

Will these work with non-Fortress balusters? Compatible with 3/4” round Vintage or Mega series balusters. The system is designed specifically for Fortress baluster dimensions.

How much height do these add to the rail? 1/16 inch added to finished rail height for the standard level version. Barely noticeable but worth accounting for in code-height calculations.

What’s different about the stair version? The stair version measures 3/4” x 3/4” x 1” and accommodates 35-37.5 degree angles, while the standard level version is 3/4” x 3/4” x 3/4”.

Do these really prevent ACQ corrosion? The nylon material protects metal balusters from ACQ lumber corrosion by creating a barrier between the treated wood and metal. No direct contact means no galvanic corrosion.
