Cutler-Hammer Double Pole Breakers: CH vs BR Series Comparison

Cutler-Hammer double pole breakers come in two incompatible residential series — the premium CH line with 3/4” width per pole and the standard BR line with 1” width per pole. CH Series breakers feature 3/4-inch width per pole construction, while BR Series uses 1-inch width per pole. The difference matters because they are NOT interchangeable in the same panel.

CH Series (Premium) vs BR Series (Standard)

The CH Series represents Cutler-Hammer’s premium residential line. These breakers feature 3/4-inch width per pole, 10 kAIC interrupting rating, thermal-magnetic trip protection, and steel-to-steel connections for reliability. Model options include:

  • CH230: Standard 30A double pole
  • CHF230: Includes red trip flag indicator for visual fault detection
  • CH230GFT: Built-in GFCI protection

The BR Series serves as the workhorse standard line. BR230 breakers use 1-inch width per pole mounting, carry a 10 kAIC interrupting rating, and feature HACR certification for heating and cooling equipment. The real advantage? BR breakers are UL approved replacements for Bryant, Westinghouse, and Challenger panels — perfect for older Montana homes with legacy electrical systems.

BR series is the 1” standard, more affordable, and broadly compatible with legacy brands. For contractors dealing with panel upgrades in existing homes, BR compatibility with multiple panel brands simplifies inventory management.

30A Double Pole Applications

These 30-amp breakers handle the workhorses of Montana residential and agricultural installations. Common applications include 240V electric clothes dryers, residential water heaters, central air conditioning units up to 36,000 BTU, 240V power tools like table saws and compressors, and well pump motors from 1.5 to 3 HP.

For Montana’s rural properties, the well pump application hits home. Well pump motors in the 1.5-3 HP range power most residential water systems across the state. These motors require dedicated 30A double pole protection — undersized breakers cause nuisance tripping during startup surge.

Both series require 10 AWG copper wire for 30A circuits. Don’t try to squeeze by with 12 AWG — the code’s clear on this.

Cutler-Hammer brings a heritage dating back to 1893 and has earned a reputation for premium protection device quality as part of the Eaton Corporation ecosystem. That legacy shows in details like the CH series’ one-piece copper bus connection and steel-to-steel connections.

FAQs

Can I use a BR breaker in a CH panel? No. They are NOT interchangeable in the same panel. CH breakers only fit CH panels, BR breakers only fit BR panels. The physical dimensions differ — CH uses 3/4” spacing while BR uses 1” spacing.

What size wire for a 30A double pole breaker? 10 AWG copper wire minimum. Both CH and BR series accept 14-8 AWG wire ranges, but 30A circuits require 10 AWG copper per code.

What’s the trip flag on CHF models? CHF models include a red trip flag indicator for visual fault detection. When the breaker trips, the flag shows red — helpful for troubleshooting which circuit caused the problem in a crowded panel.

Which panels accept BR breakers? BR breakers work in Eaton Type BR Load Centers and serve as UL approved replacements for Bryant, Westinghouse, and Challenger panels. Perfect for older homes with these legacy brands.
